2011 or 1155 or 1150

A friend was looking at the water cooling build I have going and got very excited about it. Now he wants a water cooled box and insists it be Intel based.

No real budget constraints but don't want to go hog wild either. Most of my build experience is with AMD although I have built a few i5's. This build is going to be moderate gaming and basic apps, email, web bs.

I'm thinking a i5 3570k in a Sabertooth or rog hero type mobo, 780/790 gpu, custom loop with led strip lighting. Friend was reading about the 2011 i7 socket, kind of wants the newest stuff. I said that the i5 is going to be a better game rig (based on this) for the $$$, am I right?

Just got off the phone with my friend and he's expressed a desire to learn to over clock. More reason to go with the i5 3570k IMHO. I'm going to bone up on these chips and see what bridge I'll cross

Gaming wise I suppose they don't make a difference, but the enthusiast in my says go for the i7.

As far as which system to get, I'll just say the newer tech is with the Z87 board (1150 (i7-4770K)) but for raw power, the 2011's (X79 boards/Ivy) are it.

It all comes down to what you want or need. For me, I went 2011 for the newer motherboard tech.

i always get confused by the numbers and go by their names, Sandy bridge, ivy bridge and Haswell that list goes from oldest to newest.

Sandy bridge being the oldest, isnt by any means the worst, out of the 3 architectures they simply overclock the best. Ivy bridge processors are a slight step up in terms of stock speeds, with a few mhz here and there, but they dont overclock as well. the latest haswell chips.. well therye a bit of a dud, its as if intel are sandbagging and just releasing somthing for the sake of it. again they arent a huge leap forward on either of the 2 older gens, nor do they overclock as well.

And when all is said and done, the difference between an i7 and an i5 when it comes to gaming is almost nothing, youll get a few fps more here and there due to their higher clock speeds, but wont gain anything from the hyperthreading.

Wrong. And they do perform better than the Sandy and most Ivy's sans the E. If there is to be criticisms, that is they don't overclock as well as their temps tend to get a bit high. But search around the net and you'll see many are sitting around the 4.4 range stably

Forgot to add they also feature the latest motherboard tech with the Z87 boards.

Well said as for the money part i would go the I7-3770k route a lot of places kicked them down to 249.00
I got mine for that price well worth it and not having to cough up the extra 100.00 was just tops

The 2011's Sandy Bridge-e would be an expensive overkill for your friend's needs. While 1150 (Haswell) isn't a huge improvement over 1155 (Ivy Bridge), there is no sense in getting older technology when starting from scratch. The newer MOBOs are better, anyway. Haswell would probably be your best bet.

The newer chip set in a Haswell mobo is something I didn't consider, very good point.

My friends wife has made some input, this may be a i5 with a all in one vs a i7 and custom EK dual pump loop.

I would wait for Broadwell Z97 to hit as it maybe will be the best option or make Haswell drop in price.

If one waits for the next newest technology to be released, one could be waiting forever. Not to mention the newest technology isn't always the best. For enthusiasts, Haswell was a disappointment over Ivy.

It's due in February and it takes volt control off the chip and places it back on the motherboard solving the heat issues with overclocking. If that's not worth waiting then pull the trigger on something else.

I eschew new technology until its been out for a while since it's frequently buggy. I prefer letting others be the Guinea Pigs.

I rode that constant upgrade whirlwind 10 years ago, fun, expensive and not always productive. I took me about a year to cry UNCLE! Now I'm very content to be a generation or two (or more) behind the cutting edge.

I agree but the effects of new on the used pricing was also my point. I wouldn't even think of an enthusiast getting Haswell with Z97 around the corner ! For me I'd suggest 1155 but it's pricing has been bolstered by the lack of Haswell's performance hence my point to wait a couple of weeks for the Z97 Broadwell to hit.....but I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again.

For cost considerations a i5 3570k, no firm decision on the mobo yet. The asus maximus would be very sweet but it's pushing the new (his wife's) budget ASRock has a few nice looking boards for the i5, the z87 pro lga. A vanailia asus p8z77 is dirt cheap.

I agree when the z97 hits the streets the 87's and 77's should drop in price. No hurry, my bud is waiting for the war department (wife unit) to cool off a bit before he spends money.

Is it blowing it away, no, but it is a newer chip with improved instructions, better integrated GPU (should you need it), and a better memory controller supporting higher memory speeds.

That said.... should you upgrade if you have Ivy? Well, being that both chips run about the same speed, but considering you'll need a new motherboard for the Haswell.... that may be more economics and wanting something newer than pure performance.

Looking at it from a tech side, the Z87 motherboards offer more native features and newer tech than the X79 boards.

Where the real criticisms lays is "heat" as it's said these run hotter than the previous chips, and though they may, it's not stopping them from being overclocked should one choose to. Look around the net, and you'll see Haswell chips hitting the 4.5 range stable without any exotic cooling. In short, they use the same cooling setups Ivy does. If you want 4.7 or 8, than you'd want water cooling... just like the Ivy's.

And since everyone loves Asus boards, here you go. The video is an hour long, but it gives great info on Haswell, and it's overclock ability....

I never said Haswell was a flop. I said it wasn't a huge improvement over Ivy and was a disappointment for enthusiasts because of that. Many feel it wasn't worth upgrading to from Ivy. That doesn't mean it was a flop.
