Solved 2012 Wireless Router Update suddenly showed up - do I need it?

After successfully installing all "Important" Windows updates for March and April, I got a message today that new Updates were awaiting download.

To my surprise, the "new" (Optional) update was listed as "Microsoft - Other hardware - Microsoft Wireless Router Module Update (Published 12/27/2012)" - with no KB number.

I have no idea why this Update suddenly showed up as a recommended Optional update, and I hate it when weird things happen and I don't know why they happened. My Wi-Fi network seems to be working fine, although Windows keeps saying I need to download the latest driver for my Linksys router.

So - has this happened to anyone else? Any idea why it may have happened? Am I safe to ignore it?

You can hide that Update, right clicking on it & select Hide. Then you wont get it again. I never update any hardware coming from MS Update services.

It would be best to download & install the latest Linksys roter update.

The only time I ever install an "optional" Windows update is if I can't get the associated Windows device to work any other way.

If you have tried absolutely everything and you still can't get a device to work, it would be worth a try with the optional Windows update. The best example of this is if you have an onboard Ethernet adapter on your motherboard, and you can't find the driver for it. If you connect a temporary network adapter to the computer and check for Windows updates, you will likely find one for the onboard Ethernet adapter. In my experience, if I install that update, it always gets the onboard Ethernet adapter to work.

But I would not install the optional update unless my device was not working; and I wouldn't install it in that case unless I had tried everything else first.

Sorry for the delayed reply, folks. Thank you for your help and advice on this.

--I confirmed with Linksys tech support that I have the driver I need, and everything seems to be working so I'm good there.
--I've just finished installing the latest "Important" Windows updates, and if I keep getting the "New Windows Updates Available" notifier then I'll go hide that update. (I've hidden other updates, so this will just be one more on that list.)

If there is any follow up I'll post again but for now I will mark this Solved.
