28GB disk space runs out in an hour

Yesterday, I remember my drive C still have 28 GB free disk space. But then a while ago today, I was startled when a notification pop out saying I am running out of disk space, and thought what the heck. I checked to see drive C on My Computer and I saw it only has 100mb free. I restarted my computer and see the space return back to 28gb free. But then it gradually decreases again as time went on until it gets 0 space free. I scanned my computer in safe mode and found no virus. I already did system restore (2 days back) but still it didn't repair the problem. Help! I don't know any more solution to this. It's my first time to experience this kind of problem.

My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate.

Hello, Welcome to SF,

Have you scheduled Automatic Backups ?? I guess that would be the only way it might eat lot of Memory like this. If its just Windows Backup you can find it under Control Panel make sure you disable it find where you have set it to backup.

I Have the same problem!!! There is a 290 BG of free space and after a few hours it is all gone!! Please help! Could it be a new virus??

Open task manager.
Click the performance tab.
Click on disk.
See what is writing's massive amounts of data to your disk.

Option 2
Everything Search Engine
install everything.
Run everything
See what is the largest files on your system.

System writes something and the free space grows smaller as time passes....

Do you watch a lot of internet videos? These can sometimes be stored on the hard disk to save buffering time if you watch them a second time.

Try the following...

1. 1 Open Control Panel and under Network and Internet select 'Internet Options'. Make sure that 'Delete browsing history on exit is selected then click 'Delete'. Within the screen make sure that at least 'Delete Temporary Indernet files' and 'Cookies' is selected options then click 'Delete' followed by 'ok'.
2. Run 'Disk Cleanup' as administrator and under the 'More Options' tab and under the 'System Restore and Shadow Copies' click 'Cleanup'. This will clean and remove all but the most recent Restore Points.

   Tip

To run as administrator you need to right-click then program and select it from the context menu

Another good practice is to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/394-hidden-files-folders-show-hide.html and open up C:\users\[your name]\appdata\local\temp & C:\windows\temp and delete everything in there.

   Note

You may be faced with a 'File in use' prompt, just click 'Skip' and all should be well

I rember at one point in time on my old win ME machine I turned on some paranoid logging and filled my 800gb hdd in like 3 hours :S

I did that with temp files but nothing... As we speak the free space drops 1 GB after another....

Have you enabled any form of logging????? Install "everything" its a usefull porgram and see were the MASSIVE file is....

What processes do you have running in task manager? Can you post a snip/image?

As a precaution try running a malware scan using www.malwarebytes.org and see if anything comes up.

Click the activity drop box and check the system box that should tell you everything running as system... and go ahead and grab a snapshot of cpu and network

Killed it and I gained back 20 GB of free space.... It seems that it stopped..

Its an event trace report tool.... idk how it got turned on that's why i suggested checking network traffic. When I keep 3 gadgets open at all times, cpu meter, network meeter, and disk meter. If something starts to spike I investigate unless im doing something were it should....

That was the one! Everything seems normal now. Do I have to turn this off every time I log on windows?? It is not an important system process wright? I mean it is not something that should be running? If there is a problem with a setting how can i fix it??

I would look at your MSconfig.. Run Malwarebytes and I will have too suggest that and Microsoft security essentials over avast.

Make sure there are no nasties lurking around....
