I recently reformatted my HDD and installed the original Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium OS which doesn't recognize my 2 USB 3.0 external Hdd's when I plug them in, nor in device manager. In device manager they are recognized if plugged into a USB 2.0 hub, but not plugged into the 3.0 port
I built this computer from a bare bones and originally installed Home Premium, then upgraded to Professional a couple of months later, which was a mistake on my part, but it would recognize the USB 3.0 card & Hdd's in device mgr. Would this be a problem with drivers of some sort; nothing came with the card when I installed it a year ago.

Hi oldyeller38.

Some elements of the chipset (nvidia chipset for your motherboard) is failing there. Like the SATA RAID controller as an example. The chipset elements are too old.
Code:
    Image name: nvstor.sys
[COLOR=Red]    Timestamp:        Sat Mar 20 02:15:11 2010[/COLOR] (4BA3E257)
And there is no feasible update (a very general scenario for nvidia chipset nowadays) to it in GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3 - GA-M68MT-S2P (rev. 3.0)

In this situation, the best deal is to get drivers via windows update. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2803-device-installation-settings.html

But, it will be a better solution if you perform a clean driver complete reinstall. It will solve all your driver related issues, and all new devices will be automatically detected.

Anak;
Being a retired roofing contractor, I have a lot of This Old House & Ask This Old House video files plus other videos Christian movies, Gaither Homecoming VHS videos converted to VOB format & from family genealogy going back 8 generations stored on several external Hdd's. Then I have a ton of family pictures plus important data stored for my children, grandchildren, great-grand children. To make a long story shorter, I decided to install a USB 3.0 card and buy a couple of USB 3.0 external Hdd's for storage hoping for the supposedly faster transfer rates (yeah right). You ask why I reformatted and only put Home Premium back on; well I'm not a computer guru by no stretch of the imagination, I kept having issues with 'you don't have sufficient permissions to open this file' or something to that effect with 7 Professional, whereas I didn't have that problem with Home Premium. I've recently started to burn all the important data to Bluray and beginning to get BSOD's again & computer not recognizing the 3.0 Hdd's. It seems to be a USB 3.0 issue when accessing the 2- 1TB mini-Hdd's. I have 3 larger size 5 1/4" external Hdd's & have no issues with them. These BSOD's started shortly after installing the 3.0 card and trying to access data written to the mini-Hdd's. So I'm sticking to either 2.0 usb or eSATA. My latest BSOD was a few days ago.
In your reply to thread; I Put the instructions in a Word document & stored on 1 of the 3.0 Hdd's. Well for all practical purposes that info is unattainable. I'm gonna pull the 3.0 card to see if that helps

Okay, It sounds like you're going to stay with Home Premium (H-P), let me know how you make out after you pull the card.
One thing about that card, It might not of had enough power (wrong motherboard slot) or have been installed wrong (some cards want the software installed first, some after you re-boot with the new hardware plugged in and Windows asks you where's the install media), do you have a link for it?

I believe you mentioned you could run the the mini-HDD's through the USB2 ports, that's okay. The only downside is the data rate will run at the USB2 rate.

Anak, I may have overloaded the usb circuits on the mobo. When I first put this barebones together it had 4 rear & 2 front ports; so I put a 6 port usb 2.0 card in for 4 external 5.25" powered usb Hdd's, 2-500Gb's & 2-160Gb's which wasn't enough storage, so I went to 2-1Tb 2.5" usb 3.0 Hdd's & a 3.0 card. Since removing both usb cards, I have to use a ps2 keyboard for my computer to boot-up. It wasn't recognizing the wireless keyboard & mouse & the 2 1Tb usb 3.0 Hdd's. I put the usb 3.0 card back in & the 2 Hdd's still wouldn't work, so I tore them apart & stuck them in a usb 2.0 docking station; the WD was recognized, so I coped all the data to Blu-ray disks. I'm going to all Blu-ray for back-up & forget the external Hdd's except for the 2-500Gb Hdd's. I'm going to do a total format & go back to Pro. Oh, both 1 Tb Hdd's are toast after nuking them & throwing into the garbage.

You may have overloaded them at one time but there shouldn't be any harm and running that USB2 and USB3card takes the load off the motherboard (MB).

With all the swapping out the OS in conjunction with the MB may have gotten confused and lost the drivers for the wireless keyboard & mouse.

Remember to disconnect all the HDD's except for the one you want to install the Pro OS on.

Oh, both 1 Tb Hdd's are toast after nuking them & throwing into the garbage.
What made you decide to toast them, no way to recover them for later use?

This may help if you get stuck:

Thanks for all your help & input, much appreciated. I have the original 7 64 bit disk for Home Premium & Pro upgrade on a disk so that should make a big difference.
As to the Hdd's I nuked, I tried to access them with a laptop running Home Premium & another with XP and neither of those would recognize the Hdd's. The WD Hdd had some vibration when plugged in but the Seagate didn't, beside 95% or more of the data I already had burned to Blu-ray disks.
The Hdd's were just quicker & less trouble to watch a movie or video from, just plug in and go.
I'm considering doing a disk image so as not lose all the updates with an application I read about called Macrium Reflect; years ago I had an Acronis TI that I backed up the XP os and put on a larger 2nd Hdd which worked well. Have you heard of Macrium Reflect? I'm always leary of the free stuff, usually get what you pay for.

You're welcome,

Thanks for the update on the nuked HDD's that would be an easier way to go for movies.

An option you can explore about losing updates is; Go to the Clean Install tutorial link I posted in my last reply. In the second blue note box you'll see:
   Note
If you do not have a Windows 7 with SP1 installation DVD/USB, then you can download the latest official Windows 7 with SP1 ISO file here: Microsoft: Windows 7 Direct Download Links, and use Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive with the ISO to do the clean install with.
Everything is on the up an up here, the first link is an official Microsoft D/L site for disk images.

Scroll down and look for the media refreshed English versions, that means they have all the windows updates up to the concurrent patch Tuesday date. They are .iso files so you would have to have a burner to convert them.

Macrium is what we use here at 7F and I use it also, never had a problem with it though, your mileage may vary. From what I've heard and seen of imagers like Ghost, and Acronis is they have a steeper learning curve than Macrium, but I would never try to convince you what to use, a person likes what he likes and if you have problems with whichever I'll try to help you solve them.

This is a Tutorial by whs (Wolfgang) who teaches computer classes, that's him speaking in the video:

Since my original posts concerning bsod, the past week & a half here is what I've done.
I had to format and start from square 1 by reinstalling Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit from original disk. I spent 2 days getting all applications back on that I wanted plus all updates. Then downloaded Macrium Reflect & did a disk image to a backup external Hdd. Since the reformat I've had 2 bsod's in past week. Before reformat I was thinking my issues were USB related but not sure now as this last bsod I only had a wireless keyboard & mouse using usb and occasionally my printer when I need to print or scan anything, other wise it's always off. The bsod's just seem to happen at random times, no particular pattern that I'm aware of.
I downloaded and ran dm log collector.exe; will upload the zip file.

My apologies for not getting back sooner Joe, life's thrown me a curve.

From looking at your new .dmps, both are 3B - c05 errors that points to hardware, one strictly to HDW and the other to ntkrnlmp.exe

Try going over this to see if it finds anything: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/220165-troubleshooting-steps-windows-7-a.html

   Note
I don't know how much longer I'll be able to help. I have a family emergency, and I'll probably be gone for all this next week. I will notify our help group to look in on you.

Just my two cents worth I see nothing relating to the power required in the posts and am wondering if the pSU is a) capable enough of driving hwhat you have in there and b) is it faling?

Now two things you can do is check the volts on the PSU using this ditty of mine
Using HW Info
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts are doing see my pic.
The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel
and this
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator - The most trusted PSU Wattage Calculator type in what you have installed and se what comes up it does give a margin of error generally leaning toward a larger PSU.

Just because the device is new doesn't men a - good like a new car it can break any time and this will eliminate any problems from that direction:)

PS post a pic like mine of the HW readout use this How to Use the Snipping Tool in Vista & this if you ant to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html

I wish to THANK Steve & all the others who posted advice and links to problem solving sites. After downloading & running all night, memtest86 from a flash drive there were hardware issues, namely 1 stick of ram bad. Each stick is 4 Gb's and I had 2, now I have 1, but up and running. First stick put in # 1 slot would not boot, changed to the other & it worked. Now I'm a happy camper; you guys are great.
I even downloaded and ran the Core Temp application just to check cpu temp; the jpg is a screen.

You're welcome Joe,

Not sure of the situation, but have you thought of trying to return that bad stick back to where you purchased it? Though most likely its out of warranty, maybe you can get it prorated with buying a new stick. Never hurts to try.

I already ordered a new stick from Amazon, supposed to be here Thursday. Things have gone very well since removing the old stick.
I hope things went well for your family situation.

That's good to hear you're getting that new stick soon. The consensus on adding an extra 4GB of ram is that you probably won't notice an improvement in performance, but if you watch your programs while opening and running them you should notice they'll open faster and run smoother. Post back if you have any questions.

Thanks for asking about my Mom. It was touch an go last week, then had some problems getting her into a good rehab hospital, but it's all worked out now and she's looking, feeling and sounding much better now. Though it'll still be a couple of months at least in rehab.

You're welcome.

I mentioned to Mom yesterday that I'd wouldn't be seeing her today because snow was forecast for our area, it's snowing now and about an inch has fallen with about 2 more to go, if you had to drive the 18miles to where she is, you would understand. It's bad enough in dry weather let alone wet/frozen.

I haven't called her yet today because mornings are busy with physical therapy and tests. I wanted to wait until her afternoon occupational therapy was over around 3pm my time and try to talk before supper arrived, you can be assured that I will tell her that she is on your prayer group's list.
My Mom would fit right in with your group. Her main devotion is to maintain her promises to the good Lord while raising her family with Dad Bless his Soul through prayer and good works. She'll be 90 on May 8th, and as she always noted, Harry Truman's birthday.

Yep oldyeller I will post you:)
