32 bit vs 64 bit Comparison

I have both 32 and 64 bit versions of a utility. I can't believe 64 bit version runs slower!
How do you explain this?

Launching an application not adapted for the 64-bit platform might on the contrary cause great performance loss depending on the specifics of the architecture of the processor being used.

Regarding the OP, interesting read that 64-bit has performance advantages in computation, however these advantages are still due to increased addressing space of some sort or another, the computation takes just as long.

Indeed. The processor speeds will always be the same, the advantage lies in the extra addressing space and coding.

And because of better architecture, the coding of many subroutines can be made in such a way that it will be executed much faster (not because you can have much ram).

Changes in CPU architecture are specific to the number of bits your using for address space?

64 bit machines are only faster if the program running takes advantage of the additional width of the data buss. That is almost always a function of the compiler used to create the executable though how the program is coded (what kind and width of variables are used) also has an impact.

Can I install win7/64 over my existing 32 bit OS or do I need to remove the 32 bit system first?

Hi,

You cannot upgrade 32bit to 64 bit, so you need to completely reinstall 64 bit Windows. Simply insert your Windows DVD, and then install again from scratch, overwriting the previous installation.

Be sure to backup any of your critical files that you would like to keep before doing this.

As golden said, you cannot upgrade over it, but you can install over it just like normal. No need to do anything special to remove the x32 OS first, just make sure you backup anything you want to keep.

A bit is the basic computer data and is a one or zero. 8 bits make a byte or one character such as a letter or symbol. The CPU addresses data on the bit level and moves it between the hard drive, memory, CPU and back. In a 32 bit system, also called X86, it will move data in a line or stream of data which is 32 bits wide. The 64 bit, X64, will move data 64 bits at a time, or twice as fast.
Software must be designed to take advantage of this 64 bit capability. Windows 7 X64 can run X86, 32 bit software along with 64 bit. The CPU must be 64bit to run a 64 bit OS.

Yes, I have both the x32 and the x64 versions. But when I use the x64 version, Adobe Reader or Flash Player does not work (I cannot see a picture/crossword puzzle). I have to then use the x32 version.

Should I just de-install the x64 version and install the x32 version with my CD?

I'm running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, and have Adobe Reader and Flash Player working flawlessly. Rather than do a complete reinstall, first try updating Reader and Player at http://www.adobe.com/downloads/ If you need help with that, let us know.

Quick Info:

There is no "x32" term to define "32 bit"-ness. The CORRECT term is x86, x64 comes for x86-64 in "shortened version". The basic instruction set is still x86 ISA. Why do they call it x86? Because the ISA was used in Intel's 8086, 80286, 80386, 80486 (starting to notice many "86"s?), 80586 (a.k.a Intel Pentium), 80686 (a.k.a Intel Pentium 2 and it's derivatives) - thus the term x86.

Where did x64 comes from? It comes from x86-64, meaning it's an x86 ISA with 64bit extension instruction set (made by AMD). The basic still stands, x86 instruction set to define the "standard" 32bit ISA, and x86-64 (or x64 in short) to define x86 ISA WITH 64bit extension instruction set.

We must use the correct terms in discussions...
