Thanks Bob and others my query re memory within the "innerds' of the machine has been most informative and I shall do some more research into the "bits" (no pun) as I mentioned before I am not terribly savvy when it comes to such workings.

Now ufie89 mentions that some machines cannot handle the 64bit function too well - my laptop machine a Toshiba Sat L550 i5 4G R 500G HDD I found by chance when doing a factory default can run either 32bit or 64bit so I changed to 64, and the change in speed and graphics etc outclassed the 32bit that it was originally set up to operate.

Plus as Bob and others have said that a lot of apps programs call them what you will are all heading North to Faster&Easiertouseland, and in any case 32bit stuff can still be operated on 64bit systems. So staying 32bit to even a "clueless" individual like me is a no brainer.

So leads me to think that some machines are either too old or not up to scratch spec / qualitywise. But I stand to be corrected being "Oh clueless one"! lol!!

Windows 64 is not really going to take off until Windows 8 and beyond.

It already has.

I have been running pure x64 for about 2 years now, and most new computers with over 3Gbs of RAM come preinstalled with x64.

The reason you could be seeing a lack of speed is bloatware. A clean install should speed it up.

Hi I am running 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium on one PC and 64 bit on the other.
With less than 4 GB RAM, the 32 bit seems to be faster.

I tend to agree with Jimsing. I have tried both on my antique machine with 2.5 Gb of RAM. The 32 bit version performs better. Now to be fair, I have not tried the 64 bit since January and a lot of driver improvements have been made since then. When I build a better machine, I will install a 64 bit version.

Cripes have you fellas got that there now as I haven't seen any mention of it down under yet - apart from references to it in Google / Wikipedia searches.

Plus is this going to be an upgrade from 7???? or another money spinner for M$?

safihp mate you have got me there - am the KOTBC - have no idea what this is - suppose I could do a Google but it all takes tie and at the moment have HDD probs to sort. But I will get around one day to looking it up.

I just saw a person with on issue with a game, he's running 64-bit. Seems the game won't even start or run in compatibility mode.

I won't switch to 64-bit for a while, I won't mind switching, but problems are not what I seek right now. Also, that extra "Program File x86" is pretty irritating. I could loose my installation among those two program files folders, which will cause unwanted problems.

My games runs normally most of the time. I had several games refuse to start, but those games are like 7-9 years old...

So please let me know coz am under windows XP that is about to blow up
The version am runnng had been setup sense 25/7/2005
I want to go for Win. 7 which one do u see it's more suitable for me the 32 or 64 bit.

Go with x32, as you don't have the minimum requirements for x64.

My processor supports 64-bit, and I've got all the requirements needed for 64-bit Windows 7, although I'm sticking with 32-bit. Will changing to 64-bit make any difference or will it just eat twice the RAM if I have no 64-bit compatible apps other than Photoshop?

The only difference is that you will have access to all your installed memory. 64 bit apps do not 'eat' anything and are not inherently any faster than 32 bit apps.

It will make a difference (for sure) if you have over 4 gigs of RAM.

Personally, I could probably get by with x32 as well, but why NOT use x64? The applications out there that are x64 native are small right now, but x64 is growing in popularity.

While there is no reason for you to NEED to switch over (especially if you are all setup on that install), it is definitely something you should do by your next computer or reinstall.

It will only make a difference if more memory is needed for a particular app or data set. I have 8Gb here and run both 32 + 64 bit Win 7 and there is no speed differences between the two. There are benefits to using 32 bit apps in a 64 bit environment, but speed ain't one of them. In fact I choose to use the 32 bit version of Office 2010 on my 64 bit Win 7 setup. There is absolutely no need to go crazy using 64 bit apps on a 64 bit OS.

Soon or later, more and more apps require memory. One of the example, adobe premiere CS 5 requires you to have x64 platform before you are allowed to install and use it.

Actually, in Dilbert's case, there may be a very good reason to stay with 32-bit Office. Many good commercial plug-ins only work in 32-bit. I have the same setup now, as well. I was running 64-bit Office, but needed to use an Excel add-on that only ran in 32-bit. I was a bit ticked I needed to remove and re-install Office. We're getting to 64-bit slowly and surely, but there are still a few hiccups on the the road to all 64-bit.

The problem is that many people think that 64 bit apps are inherently better or faster and that is just not the case.
