32 bit vs 64 bit Comparison

The problem is that many people think that 64 bit apps are inherently better or faster and that is just not the case.
Ah. Yes, I suppose people may think so, but you're right, they are not.

I like the title, not to mention the content ;).
My search was fast; starting at point zero, (<http://www.sevenforums.com/>, I located your post in approximately 2 minutes. Keep up the good work.

offtopic: I use Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I have only 1.5 GB of RAM . So your comment about how much RAM the 32 bit versus 64 bit OS can use has made me rethink the adequacy of my RAM. I am having so many 'not responding' problems. I thought it was due to the apps being non-windows certified (iTunes, Firefox and Open Office) .
again, thanks for a terrific, understandable technical overview. Paddy Power.

There wont be much of a difference in performance, but I really like the Office 2010 layout and ribbon over Office 2007.

Just out of curiosity, did you try to run it in the Vista compatibility mode?

It wouldn't install. Intuit admitted that it's not compatable with 64 bit, and they have no plans to make it so!

Lordbob75...

I bow to your greatness! This is by far the best, most concise, most helpful article on the subject of 32bit vs 64bit that I've had the good fortune to stumble upon.

My son and I are in the process of building a "Killer Gaming Machine", and have only a few pieces left to order. The OS is next. I consider myself to be a fairly experienced PC builder, but last night he asked me the dreaded question "hey dad, what's the difference between 32bit and 64bit?" .... "Well son, it's like this...hey would ya look at the time, gee we should really pick this topic up in the morning when I have more time to fully explain the complexities..."

Unfortunately--me being way too honest--I actually said..."I have no 'F-ing' idea. Why don't you go to bed while I stay up all night trying to find someone on the internet who can explain it to me in a simple, efficient, perfect, relay-able, most-awesome manner. Then, in the morning, you can yank my head up from my desk, wipe the drool from my mouth, and see if I was successful in finding this holy-grail. If, however, I am unsuccessful, feel free to call me a worthless tool, and hang your head in shame. And, of course, I will completely understand when you have decided to love your mother more than you love me.

Seriously, I spent two hours scouring the net for the best explanation. I got bits and pieces that made some sense, but not one, single, understandable article that got right to the core of the issues in objective, practical terms. That is, until yours....

Again, thanks for the article Lordbob75..., and most important...thanks for saving my dignity.
