Well, perhaps somebody else will eventually come up with another quick fix or even MS or Nvidia will release a patch or something to fix it properly!

We can only wait and see what happens!

Not having troubled to reread all 240+ posts, but...

I have an Ati 4870 card (XFX brand) and am stuck with the same problem on my Hann 25" monitor. Like the rest here I am stuck at 59Hz on a monitor supposedly capable of 75Hz.

Any hope for us Ati people?

As an addition to my previous post:
The tool works as far as every program shows 60hz, including windows itself and the nvidia control panel. My monitor though still shows 59,8hz, not 59,9hz (yeah, it really is that small difference that sucks ...).
That tool also doesn't help within games. So my desktop will work now at e.g. 1024x768@60hz (I can set that refresh rate without that tool, too), incl. monitors own upscaling, but in-game (e.g. A Vampyre Story) will still run at 59hz.

That makes this tool perfectly useless for me :/

Talking about DirectRefresh? I can't help you if your monitor is giving you information, as mine doesn't. I used dxdiag to check my refresh rate, but I don't think it shows decimal places (or I've never used a fraction of a hz).

A note about the tool for anyone reading this, if you leave your cursor inside the cell you are editing, it probably won't work. Click a different cell.

that answer on post 224 worked for me! Everything says running at 60hz now. I don't know why the stupid menu option wouldn't work. But thank you thank you for that answer!

Hopefully all the other timing stuff is good staying as is, cause I didn't change any of it.

HI ALL,

THIS IS A SOLUTION FOR NVIDIA CARDS, AND IT WORKS GREAT.

After frustrating countless hours, I found a fix that works like a charmmmm.

- Go to Nvidia Control Panel
- Go to Add resolution
- Create Custom Resolution
- Click on Timing
- Click on Manual
- Set refresh rate to 60.001 Hz
- Press Apply, and Have funnnn

Thanks for this solution. It worked for me. I just hope that the final retail version of Windows 7 has it fixed. I am on build 7100 right now.

Firstly, this didn't work for me as the manual options won't let me set a refresh rate above 60.000Hz.

Secondly, is anyone suffering from this issue getting a kind of stuttering effect periodically when watching TV in Media Center?

Ok well I did all of that for both monitors but it won't actually select the new custom entry. If I try to select it and Apply then it comes up with the box asking if I want to keep the settings but, when I click OK, it switches back to the original one under PC with the 59Hz refresh rate

Well I could post screenshots but I'll just describe it tbh. Followed the guide all the way through without issues, only problem is when I get to step 10, in the list the original resolution (with recommended) next to it remains selected in the list with the new custom one above it. The refresh rate shows as 59Hz still. If I select the new custom resolution at the top of the list then the refresh rate changes to 60Hz but then I click Apply and I get the prompt whether to keep this change and, when I click Yes, it reverts back to the original, recommended res, with 59Hz.

I've found a utility that lets me force the refresh rate to 60Hz which seems to work, although I'd obviously have to use it every time I boot plus probably also when I come out of a full screen game or similar but will use it to check if this 59Hz issue is the cause of my Media Center stuttering issues

It's really not a big deal though unless it helps with your Media Center. The rounded down to 59Hz used in Windows 7 is practically the same as 60Hz.

Hi everybody! Good to see that this have solved this freaking problem for so many!

Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. No matter how I tried, I'm still having issues because of that eerie refresh rate.

It was so difficult to put my monitor in its native resolution (1680x1050) in the desktop enviroment, but at least it was feasible. Nevertheless, in some games, that resolution simply doesn't apear in the options. To name a few:

- Call of Duty Modern Warfare
- Anyone using Source engine from Valve

The strangest one is Stalker - Shadow of Chernobil, that simply goes blank (though I still can hear it, that music theme on the menu).

Anyway, I've tried both methods described here, tried switching my DVI cable for a VGA one, no go. In time, I'm really pissed off, since I'm from Brazil, and here this OS costs us so much (I've paid equivalent to 400 dollars for the Ultimate version, box)...

Anyway, if anyone knows something worth a try, just let me know. I was following this thread for some time, and since there are no more replies for a couple of days, I found a good idea don't let it vanish...

Hiya, sorry for the delay in replying.

I've given up on this for two reasons.

Firstly, the NVidia control panel is useless. As I said before, it won't keep my settings and keeps reverting to the original "recommended" resolution rather than the custom one I've added. I've just tried to do it again to confirm what happens at step 9 for you but I now can't even delete the custom resolution I've added - it prompts me to delete it, I answer Yes and it just ignores me.

Secondly, I'm now thinking that this 59Hz issue isn't the problem at all when it comes to my Media Center issue. Reasons for this are that the monitors are both reporting 60Hz so I suspect it's actually supplying something like 59.99Hz which is close enough to make no difference. What is causing the issue is Aero! If I turn off the Aero interface then I get no stuttering issues with Media Center at all. Turn it back on and they appear immediately.

As I can't believe this would be a general Windows 7 issue, I can only deduce that it's NVidia's drivers. So not only is their control panel hopeless, their drivers can't even manage the Aero interface without problems. Utterly useless and I'll shall be going with ATI next time I think.

Hi everybody! Not sure if it is posted somewhere else, but since I searched so hard and didn't find it, guess I'll just share here what finally solved thar f***ing problem for me.

I was unable to sucessfully modify that refresh rate using custom resolutions. That method just didn't work for me. Nevertheless, I was pretty sure that the symptoms I was experiencing were due problems with the way W7 was recognizing my monitor.

So I tried Powerstrip, made a custom DRIVE (not a single resolution), save it, installed it manually and voilá! Now every games work fine, with my native resolution showing in the options the way it was supposed to be! The only exception is STALKER Shadow of Chernobil, but since I have the Steam version I bet it's something localized, since all other Steam games work fine (CoD4, HL2 and episodes, Portal, Company of Heroes, all Steam working fine).

Anyway, this forum was very useful for it teached me much about this problem, so I could look for a proper answer on the net! Cheers!
