64bit Media Player

i'm desperately searching for a decent media player that works under windows 7 64.

it doesn't even have to be a 64 bit software, just something that i can actually rely on.

i used to use gomplayer (all time favorite) on my 32 system, and installed kmplayer later on just to play music because gomplayer didn't work well with all mp3 tags.

but both failed me on my windows 7 64 bit installation, and now i can't find a single decent video player that can manage mkv files.

i've been installing codecs like krayzee and i got wmp11 to play mkv files, but it doesn't display the subtitles on my mkvs or even lets me select the streams.

Doesn't Windows 7 come with 64-bit WMP 12? That should work fine, for me it does, although there's some MP4 files it won't play. I like this one: VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player
thanks for the quick reply.

vlc crashes in 64 on every second video i load, sometimes in the middle of the video it'll just lose sound. so that's definitely a no go.

wmp works fine just doesn't play my mkv subtitles and also struggles with some mp4s as you stated.

the only one that really works is mpc but it doesn't let me make playlists, which i desperately need for my music, music videos, funny clips and anime series.

thanks for replying.

here is a list of the softwares i have tried thus far (they must all be the latest versions, because i got them off the author sites):

vlc, gomplayer, media player classic home cinema, kmplayer, smplayer, splash, kantaris, itunes, windows media player 12, divx player.

i wrote a little review about all of them on my blog:
Jay's Little Online World

in case anybody is interested or bored.

and i ended up with mpchc and windows media player 12 (tweaked like crazy - even though i hate that program).

JayLovesKases,
Have you checked out this thread?
http://www.sevenforums.com/music-pictures-video/16179-win7codecs.html#post165258

A lot of people here use and like Shark007's setup. I think a couple of the cool features are the ability to revert to WMP's native codecs at will, to uninstall the whole codec pack quickly and easily and to be able to select WMP 64 or WMP 32 as the default media player.

If you read through that thread, you'll see quite a few rather highly respected people on here give it praise. I think one key in trying it sucessfully is to remove all of the other codec packs, etc. that you have installed before installing Shark007's codec packs. I really like it as it plays all the .mkv files I throw at it.

i think you must have something wrong with your system - drivers maybe?

lots of other people use vlc or kmplayer with no problems (or maybe only minor problems)...

uuuh thats gonna take forever because i tweaked the hell out of my wmp12. but i guess it might be worth it. i'll get to it right away!

doesn't it say it uninstalls everything before installing though or did i misinterpret that?

well i can't argue that it's not. but i had vlc on my old system (vista 32) same problems with no codec packs installed and later with some codecs installed, i used vlc on my work computer as well, which was also vista 32 and it had incredible faults and crashes. i even replaced vlc player on my friends computer with kmplayer and she's loved me for it ever since. so i really doubt that it's just MY SYSTEMS but 64 is a new world for me, so this time with kmplayer it might really just be my system. like i've often said, i loved kmplayer.

what i think though, since you haven't had any problems with kmplayer i guess it's just your file selection. because i played the forgotten and some other series on my kmplayer and in the middle of the file the sound would just get distorted. which it never did on my old 32 system (with practically the same software+codecs installed). and it crashes on music videos that i used to be able to watch on my 32 system, further more it doesn't show any video footage of some clips and just plays the audio.

i often get clips from all kinds of sites, and blogs, even youtube, and other video sites, so naturally my clips are variously decoded. so maybe it's just that.

if you'd like i can sent you some clips that forced my kmplayer to crash and you can ask me whether they crashed yours too.

or maybe you're right it's the drivers. which would that be though? my graphics drivers? windows 7 pretty much found everything on my computer by default but i looked around to make sure everything was tagged correctly. i know i'm just a little girl but i do think i have the windows for dummies level of insight.

Yup, it looks like it does uninstall other codecs. Either that's new or I just didn't notice it before.

I tried to download those files you are having problems with to give them a try with the Shark007 codecs I have. I signed up for a free account but couldn't seem to be able to download them. Now I'm timed out for an hour before trying again. Do you have any other (perhaps smaller) ones I could try for you?

thanks for going through all that trouble! you're a sweetheart!

i hate uploaded.to as well but sadly that's the only link i could find this quickly, because i just downloaded that clip yesterday. i'd have to upload other ones myself. and they are all mkv files of about that same size. which would take me an hour to upload to rapidshare. so maybe you can just wait for the 1 hour timeout to pass ^^

:o

(ps why did you sign up? you just had to go to that link wait 9 secs then press download - i didn't even know they had a free signup)
