Actually with a 150Mbps NIC and 4 bars signal strength you should expect to see 65Mbps precisely.

With 5 bars signal strength using a 300Mbps USB adaptor and the correct router settings of 802.11N Only using WPA-2 with AES encryption plus channel bonding would allow you to obtain 300Mbps.

The ISP's rated speeds are always slower when testing through a wireless connection, unless it's a very fast wireless connection like the newer AC.

I'd say you need to change your Wi-Fi adapter to a 300 Mbps capable one. I recommend Broadcom since they give the most reliable connection. They're also widely used by Apple computers. I would avoid Intel since they have driver issues for both Windows 7 and 8 that make their excellent hardware unreliable.

At my campus, the router and access points they have are excellent, giving my Broadcom WiFi consistent 300Mbps even if there's more than 50 clients nearby. Their speed, however, is slow which is capped at 4 down and 4 up.



At home, I only have a Wireless-G router which is more than enough to handle my 15/1 plan (SoCal internet is very expensive)
