I installed ultimate on my girlfriends gateway laptop about 2 weeks ago. It was a clean install. The machine had vista but she wanted a fresh start. It has 4 gigs of ram, and I think 320g hdd. Not sure of exact model number or what processor but I will know after class. She has been having an issue ever since the install that it freezes during boot but only intermittently. If it does it can be powered down and turned back on and a message comes up with two choices, one tries a startup repair which fails and the other deletes something and then the machine works fine. Sorry about the lack of info, I will try to get the exact details of message and choices so I can post. I will also get exact model numbers for everything. This issue of ultimate is the microsoft nfr from the expert zone if that means anything. Thanks in advance for any ideas

Welcome to Seven Forums, 24x24.

You might want to check and ensure that the machine has the latest drivers for the motherboard components.

Look forward to your follow-up with the detailed info.

Home LAN through Linksys hub to 4 port and wireless switch/router. Networked HP 2600n. Wife's computer running Windows 7, and spare laptop running Ubuntu "Karmic Kola" (9.10).
The laptop is a gateway m-1617.
The error is not bsod but just a black screen that reads:

The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to resume again.

Continue with system resume

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu

Continuing only allows for a constant black screen with a flashing cusor and no optional user control with the interface with the machine while deleting allows the boot process to continue and logon is allowed but then it will freeze then reboot and machine is ok most of the time.

I checked the smbios and it is version 2.4.

Any ideas?

Yeah it says starting windows and it gets shut down properly prior to this happening so it isn't a bad shutdown

Try updating your bios. I did it and it got rid of my "starting windows" issue. If it is your first time updating bios check out the MB manufactures website. Otherwise if it is a HP or Toshiba ect. check their site. (Just realized you tried bios already....)

Another thing I did was download my chipset drivers. (for my Intel I7 920) (try seeing if you have any chipset drivers) (give this a go)

If you have any questions I can try to help. I am new to this stuff but I did find my answer.
