8GB 1600Mhz + 4GB 1333Mhz

Would this work? Just that I may sell my 4GB sticks and was wondering if having 2x 4GB sticks at 1600Mhz would work with 2x 2GB sticks at 1333Mhz. Would they just lower down to 1333Mhz?

Sorry QP, but it is *never* advisable to mix memory sticks in the way you've proposed. If you do this and it does work, well that would be just pure luck to do so. Not a good idea.

I would just use the 8GB of 1600MHz. Why would you downgrade the speed by the 1333MHz sticks. 8GB is plenty of RAM for 99.9% of all programs anyhow.

Stick with 8GB of RAM, unless you are running virtual machines..you most likely won't need more than 8GB of RAM.

I already have 4GB 1333Mhz though. And if I'm going to use up all my DIMM slots it'll be 12GB of RAM and not 8GB I'll be having. At least then I'll never have to worry about RAM ever again then.

Your call - but be aware that they all will run at 1333MHz - if the run at all. 12GBs is a mighty overkill, unless you run CAD applications.

I do run various VM machines and do a fair bit of video encoding too. But really the 12GB is just to future proof any games that may be in 64bit in the future. That and no more HDD caching too.

8 GB of matched ram would be my choice. Installing mismatched ram just to fill in all the slots IMHO is not a smart move.
