For those that like the Start screen, with it's tiles and "modern" apps they can choose to use that, for those like me that prefer the traditional desktop, a single click is all that is required (and even that is eliminated with 8.1). Some people may even prefer to stay in the middle using what they like from both interfaces.

Exactly.

You can either embrace or ignore "modern". I largely ignore it.

For those that need more than what is provided by windows itself, there are quite a few 3rd party apps like Classic Shell or Stardock.

Like myself. I started with Classic Shell and ended up Stardocking my installation. Any last niggles with 8 sorted. It's that simple.

By mixing native Win and Stardock I have an OS that suits me and my usage. So much so I'm sticking with the vanilla Win 8.

IMO, there are way too many people whining about Win 8 given the fact that it is not significantly different from Win 7. I feel the hatred for it is totally unfounded.

It is rather pointless. Unnecessary vitriol.

Although I think it's almost mandatory to report distaste after first usage. 8 seems to have a habit of just annoying people on first sight. I know my initial impressions were not favorable.

Then I installed Classic Shell... Irritation gone. A very easy fix.


If it were unfixable, then the hate would have a leg to stand on, but it is easily fixable and thus no leg.

It's interesting that people that haven't even tried Win 8 can be so opposed to it.

I'm not a win-8 basher just an uninterested observer I intend to ride win-7 all the way to 2020..
Beside with mediocre chip sets as it is I don't see what the advantage would be in win-8.1 for my machines.

If you could post a picture of what is listed in System/ Advanced system settings/ Performance/ Visual effects, possibly we might have a better idea of the changes and entry options,
I'm not in habit of downloading things just to try them out, especially a new o.s. which if not done properly can have someone reloading win-7 when they might not like doing so as another Chill room question said they do it every month lol Not Me.

My main gripe with W8 is essentially two fold -- one is the total ridiculousness of using FIXED resolution on Large monitors for Metro apps -- on a 60 inch high quality LCD these just look STUPID and people are buying better and larger monitors these days even if they aren't buying so many PC's. You really need to be able to window these properly so as not to waste screen real estate, and secondly the fact that every time you install say large windows applications like the full adobe CS suite or Visual Studio (full version) every stupid .EXE file creates a tile - and it's a real messy and tedious job to tidy this all up AFTER installation.

Performance wise W8 is fine but I rather think the idea of having an endless 5 KM scroll on the screen isn't the best way of running large numbers of applications --even on a Mobile phone I find scrolling gets tedious as the number of applications installed rises.

Maybe a top level tile which expands into lower level tiles might be better for desktops.

As for Windows to go -- an EXCELLENT tool but should be available to NON enterprise users too -- there are loads of external consultants out there who could usefully use this system. I'm lucky as I got mine on a previous contract -- or you can get it from TechNet (W8 enterprise) but that service unfortunately will be shutting its doors soon. In this case the interface is OK since it would be somewhat unusual to have 100's of apps installed on a Windows to Go system.

I run VMware workstation on it with W7 and XP guest VM's --that way I don't have to keep re-activating Office when I'm at a different site and different hardware is detected. The W8 Enterprise is KMS activated so no problem with the HOST w8togo system. Using an SSD for this even the VM's give a very satisfactory response time.

@ any Ms employee reading this stuff -- please widen the availability of W8 to go. (Actually provided you use the BCD command from a W8 enterprise system you can actually create a Windows to Go from a W8 PRO system. !!! W8.1 isn't available yet though in an Enterprise version either).

I'd say installing windows 8/ 8.1 on any machine without touch screen interface would be the biggest user error,
Another user error would be accomplished very easily spending the first week in regedit tweeking odd install defaults on such a machine.

Huh? None of my Win 8/8.1 machines have a touch screen and I like it that way. Touch screen interface on anything other than a phone or tablet is pretty much useless.

I've never needed to do any regedit tweaks to my Win 8 machines.

I was following your flow but without knowing everything or just the basics about win-8/ 8.1 it's a bit premature to jump into a o.s. which has so many defaults for touch interface/ first release was not all that friendly for a mouse or some types of mice possibly ?
I'm not a member of the Polar bears so cold/ freezing water is not appealing,
Brink has been hard at work for sure making these tutorials,
But you have to remember windows 7's defaults are not as left field as windows 8's are,
I have spent no time in regedit in windows 7 which will not be the case in win-8.1
I've rejected Bing desktop search/ and Skydrive folder in win-7 then you get to all of the scroll bars/ icon sizes.....
Seems a bit cumbersome just for a new o.s. IMHO
Ease of use and basic customization has to be on the forefront of an o.s.
I'm not an engineer,

I looked for Brinks tut first but didn't see it. Can you post a link for it?

There wasn't a specific tutorial for the aero or transparency features which exist that I saw,
I browsed some in the appearance and personalize section briefly/ read about 6.. so yours was the only one which showed the basics but I would love to see what the Performance/ visual effects section looks like it should list every thing available.
Unless it to has been dumped and replace with regedit

In my opinion windows 8 is fine but not worth the upgrade if you're already on windows 7. I could live with it if I had the os installed, not that hard to get use to but not worth the money if you're on windows 7 already unless your on something outdated like xp, vista is still ok if you got enough ram. Used it for about 3 months when it was in testing so I pretty much learned how to use it in about 2 days of tinkering around with it. Has some nice changes like boot and load times but not enough for me to want to change. Only way I would transfer is if it brings some kind of new technolgy with it for new gen graphics cards and cpus that would make graphics look great and run fast like windows 7 did with dx11, other then that I have no motivation for upgrading.

You know it's a odd thing,
I would of bought win-8 when it was first released but a oem disk was not offered only upgrade disks which was fairly worthless because I had to reload windows completely,
The store didn't even have windows 7 oem's available because they Pulled them off the shelves because of win-8,
So I had No choice but to get win-7 at TigerDirect only 101.98,
Got another one for a future build later on which might be more win-8 friendly/ better hardware..

You do realize that a full install can be done with upgrade media don't you? Upgrade pertains mainly to the discount MS offers to existing Windows users to entice them to move to the next release.

Another fun note,
The computer with the issue already had a upgrade disk to win-7 which I was told by the computer manufacture it could not be used for a re-install of windows 7/ prior upgrade disk from Vista.
