Access denied only on computer level

Gone throught a few tutorials and help sections but still no success.

On computer with Windows 7 I have 2 shared folders.
They are meant to be accessed by everyone - no password needed.

If I try to access this computers in explorer with \\computer_name
access is denied.
If I specify the path to shared folder there is no problem e.g. \\computer_name\shared_folder

I would like to access also to the 'root' - \\computer_name so that I can explore all shared folders (no need to know path exactly)

I appreciate any help.

Thank you in advance :)

Unless i dreaming, W7 won't allow root c:\ to be accessed via a share. Let me go a quick test.

Sorry for misleading term.
With root I didn't mean e.g. c:\

I just want access to \\computer_name

Now I get message 'Access denied'

I expect behaviour like with my other computers
\\computer_name, and I can view all shared folders and printers.

Now I have to specify actual path to get access.

No, it doesn't. \\computer_name shows you an overview of all shared folders on that machine. Just as the OP explained what he expects to see. I don't know why it's not working for him, though. Must be some access rights setup problem.

I am not sure if we understand each other.

With computer name I mean name of remote computer somewhere on the local network.
Normally on other computers I get with \\computer_name,
all shared folders, drives or printers which are shared.

Err... no aem, \\computer_name will show you the list of shares that computer has to offer. maMile, try removing all shares, and re-share them, and for the safe side, you need to assign a password to your account to avoid any nagging from Windows saying about access denied, etc...

After adding a password to your account, make sure "Password protected sharing" is turned on.
Next time you open your share, it will ask for username/password, enter your username/password, it will then show you it's shares.

Doesn't really matter on which machine you do it. Try it, open file explorer and type \\computer_name as the address, with computer_name being the name of the PC you're currently on. It gives you an overview of the shared folders on your machine, just as it would, if you would do the same thing from another machine.

But the OP says that he's trying it from another machine, and this machine won't show this overview, so there's something wrong with network discovery, even though he can access the shared folders by directly typing their network path. I seem to recall having had this problem in the past, between two XP machines, but I can't remember what fixed it in the end. (Probably a lot of cursing and kicking the machines until they cooperated.)

That's funny, i use the \\computer_name all the times but didnt realised those things i see are actually shared folders.

I tried from another machine and i get logon box, typed in the credentials of the W7 im current using and no issues.
