Accidentally used bad/illegitimate Win7 Install, cannot make genuine.

Please forgive me if this is a question that's been asked & solved before... I've been searching relentlessly and cannot seem to find a solution to my problem.

Background: I upgraded all of my hardware and, upon doing so, realized the best thing to do would be to start from scratch and do a fresh install of Win 7 (Ultimate, 64bit). I had a brand new, legitimate serial # in hand, but no disk. So, in a pinch, I borrowed a burnt copy of windows from a friend; it ended up, much to my dismay, being a cracked copy... It worked fine at first, but eventually I ended up with the "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message... Now I cannot make my Win 7 genuine, slui.exe is missing, etc.

Despite having a good serial, I think there's something up with the actual software I installed that is making it impossible for me to activate/verify/etc.

I tried to follow the instructions in this thread:
http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...e-getting-build-7601-windows-not-genuine.html

But for slui.exe, "Access is denied."

I now have a legitimate iso for windows 7... However, if I use the upgrade option (so as not to lose files/settings/programs, etc.), it tells me that my current version of Windows is more recent than the version I'm trying to upgrade to.

All I want to do is fix windows without having to wipe everything completely & start over. Is there a way to repair a bad/cracked copy so that I can actually make it genuine?

Also, I read something about a "get genuine kit" that some retailers have... how does this work? can the average person get one? would it even fix my problem?

Hi Annie, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The easiest way to proceed would be to start, once again, from scratch and do a clean install. Download original Windows 7 ISO image, same edition as your existing valid product key. Burn it to a DVD or a USB stick with Microsoft Windows USB-DVD Download Tool and you are ready to go.

This quote from our tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html, step 1.:
   Note
If you do not have a Windows 7 with SP1 installation DVD/USB, then you can download the latest official Windows 7 with SP1 ISO file here: Microsoft: Windows 7 Direct Download Links, and use Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive with the ISO to do the clean install with.

Even if there was an easy fix, starting with a cracked and pirated version of Windows is not worth the possible trouble. You make yourself a favor by installing a legit, valid Windows using your product key.

Friend says it was an OEM copy and not "cracked," but I still don't get why everything would be so wonky.

If I click the activation link. I get "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

This error is produced most often when attempts have been made to circumvent activation and validation requirements.
The fact that there are errors showing that validation failed on 26th May means that any System Restore poit is likely to be unreliable.

Your best option is a clean install - although a repair install should also work, providing your use known-genuine media.

Guess a clean install is in order then.
