Acer D2D recovery issue after installing windows 7

Hi,

I have Vista OS loaded as the default one by Acer. I recently installed windows 7 on a formatted partition (which formerly had my data). And I believe since then I haven't been able to use the Acer D2D recovery. It should come up by pressing Alt+F4 during POST, but it doesn't. I have made sure that it is enabled in the BIOS. I went through lot of forums and they suggest it's an Acer MBR issue and that it may have been deleted or something ?? Someone suggested me to use partedit and change partition ID to 07 and then run some command like " mbrwin.exe install ^@(% ", but after doing that I couldn't load any of the OSs. I somehow was able to repair (recovered as it shows in the dual boot screen now) both of them by using windows 7 DVD (thank God). And on top of that, Acer D2D still doesn't work. Any solutions on the issue ? Thanks!

Sorry I must be dense. what is the issue? Once you went from vista to win 7 the recovery partition was for all intents and purposes dead. It can only (using a vista dvd) restore you to vista.

What was it you were trying to do?

You can of course (if you have a win 7 dvd) set up a new recovery partition that will get you back to win 7

As Ken says, it's likely the Recovery partition was disabled when you clean installed Win7. This happens frequently with all models and is why we always suggest making the Recovery Disk set even if you keep the Recov partition after Win7 install.

You can always order Vista Recov disks from Acer; in fact they will mail you copies for free within 90 days of computer purchase.

You can also always borrow a Vista installer DVD for your version if you wanted to reinstall Vista using the key stickered to machine, or make a backup image of your Vista partition to save externally or to DVD's.

You can even include your Vista partition in a Win7 Backup Image which can be used to reimage the HD (or a replacement) with both OS's. In fact, it is likely that your Vista partition contains the System Active MBR for both OS's so it would be included anyway in a Win7 backup image.

Or you can use a 3rd party Imaging app like Macrium Reflect to image just the Vista.

The way to know for sure if Recov Partition is dead is to set it active and attempt to boot it, but it sounds like you might have already tried this, and requires a way to reset System partition active if it doesn't start. As I'm sure you know, running Recov will return to factory condition and may wipe out your Win7.

You can also unhide System files and Hidden files in Control Panel>Folder Options>View to browse the partition to see if there is a bootable image file to mount or burn.
