Achieving the Impossible

Most people know that you can't create a new folder and give it the name con (try it), but I can prove you wrong.



The question is... How?

mkdir \\.\c:\users\name\Desktop\con

Been a while since I saw this one.

Edit: And before somebody gets mad because they cannot delete this folder\
rmdir \\.\c:\users\profile\desktop\con

Rename folder con alt+0160

Not tried that method, but mine's not as convoluted.

Rename folder con alt+0160

That would give a folder name length of 4 characters. Mine only has 3.

I didn't think mine was convoluted. It's a single command at a command line. But then again, I'm quite comfortable at the command line....and many people aren't.

All I had to do is right click and create a new directory, name it "con", and I did it. I don't see how it was hard.

How It Was Done

It's time to reveal the method, or trick that I used.

The characters c and n are as entered directly from the keyboard, but the o isn't all it seems. It is actually a symbol that, to all intents and purposes, looks as though it is.

For this, I used my friend Character Map and carefully selected a suitable character.



I clicked on Copy to place the character in the clipboard for later use. I then created the folder as usual and renamed it con, using the Ctrl+V shortcut to insert the o character.

LOL now that was worth the wait. Your a horse of a different color that's for sure.

It's been a while since I messed with DOS... wasn't con one of the reserved words (like lpt1)? Con... console, iirc. Like "copy con xyz.bat" --> copy contents of console into xyz.bat, i.e. DOS would wait for you to type stuff (from the console) and put what you typed into xyz.bat. If memory serves right.

Edit:
Extended ascii, always good for laughs. Back before XP it was the good ol' alt-255 char.

You called my method convoluted, and this is your method.

Open up cmd prompt, type this: mkdir \\.\c:\users\name\Desktop\con
