I would not have expected the MAC address alone to trip this, unless other significant changes were also made to the system.

FWIW, you can set the MAC address back to what it should be, and re-activate (it may need a phone call, but shouldn't be a problem, since you have a Retail licnese shoing in the report, and the phone line is a Freefone one).

Up to you how you want to proceed, but I'd do that, as it prevents any confusion later if you decide to use the Wireless NIC at the same time as this one (routers tend to look for MAC addresses rather than machine names).

Thank's for that. That was the only change. That said, the on-board LAN had never been switched on. ( I suspect you may find this important. ). As for bothering, it's cool, no problem at all. I wanted to know what was going on too.

That would explain it, then.
Assuming that MS still uses the same kind of polling system as was in XP, then the system took the removal of the Wireless card as an essential change.
Becuase you'd disabled the LAN in BIOS (I assume you meant), then the system couldn't see it at all, and therefore took no account of it - instead, it read the Wireless card as being part of the system.
If you choose in future to disable the LAN again, simply disable it in Device Manager, rather than in the BIOS - this means that it can still be enumerated by licensing, even if not accessed by the user, and you will be able to swap other LAN/Wirelesess cards in and out with gay abandon without tripping anything.

Exactly.

Since at the time of the first activation, you had disabled the integrated LAN in the Bios, and activated with the Wireless card, that had been taken in the enumeration. Since the Wireless card gives a substantial weightage in the activation algorithm (atleast 3 units compared to one unit each by other components/devices in XP) the removal of the wireless card amounted to a "substantial" change that required a reactivation. Your confirmation that you made no other changes confirms that the NIC does carry a greater weightage in Windows 7 too.

Since you desired to solve it without calling MS in your first post, I gave you the "cheat" trick.

As Noel has pointed, you will have no problems in reactivating the genuine retail version with the integrated LAN with its original MAC. Then you can plug-in or plug out the Wireless card with impunity with its original MAC. If you do not want to do it, and still want to use the Wireless Card additionally, then give it a different MAC, with its MAC given to the integrated LAN. ( Perhaps you have to change its MAC with another PC so that there is no clash of the Titans ---oops! - MACs)

( This MAC change is frequently advised to users who want to change the Wireless Card if the MAC of the card in use is tied up to their ISP connections. It just saves the botheration of calling the ISP and begging them to tie up the new card MAC for the connection. Your case is similar.)

The moral of this story - When activating the OS for the first time, do not disable any of the MB components/devices in the BIOS. Let all of them lend their weight.( Disable them from within Windows later. )

Yes, as Noel has correctly pointed out in an earlier post Windows gathers most of the activation data from the BIOS which enumerates the MB, checks everything is OK, before handing over the mantle to the OS.

You *may* have been all right if all you'd done was disable the NIC - but you activated with a different NIC.
If you'd activated by telephone with *no* NIC installed, you could probably have gotten away with switching NIC's at will.
