Active X does not show up at all

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC yesterday on clean install and so far it has been great.

However, I noticed there is no Windows Media Player 12 (which I'm fine with because I don't use WMP).

So I disabled IE 8 and installed Chrome. Then installed the WMP plug-in which worked for me before using Vista. No WMV shows up on Chrome. So I brought back IE 8 and it doesn't even ask for single Active X installation where normally it would ask me to install Flash player ActiveX, WMP ActiveX, etc.

Download the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin - Port 25: The Open Source Community at Microsoft

I installed this for Chrome since Vista days and it always worked so I think there's a problem lying somewhere else.

Could anyone tell me what is going on? If anything, is there a direct way to watch WMV files on Chrome directly? I would really hate to use both IE and Chrome. I've been using Winamp browser to watch WMV (seems like it's same as IE) but I use Winamp to listen to music, so I didn't bother much.

First off welcome to the Se7enforums! jmodello

When first finishing any Windows installation you have to grab all the updates and go for some thing separately at times like the Java runtime, Adobe Flash Player, and of course first go through the initial setup making WMP the default player at first for everything like sounds assigned to Windows functions.

If the icon isn't present on the taskbar that may have been from an incomplete install of 7 there where other problems may come up. By going into the Start>All Programs menu you can pin a new shortcut by simply right clicking on WMP there or create a shortcut you drag onto the taskbar once pasted on the desktop.

Hi!

I do not see WMP. I went to Program Files to check.. though it has a folder and a subfolder named Network Sharing, but it's empty. Is that the problem why WMV active-x won't load on IE 8 or Google Chrome (using Firefox plug-in).

I downloaded the RC from Microsoft and did what I'm supposed to do, so I'm not sure what is going on. Even when I was using Vista, I disabled WMP and used DivX player/Winamp. On Win7 RC, I do not see WMP on Turn On/Off Windows Feature either.

I installed latest Flash player and Java.

Edit: Ah... WMP was hiding under 'Media Features' on Turn On/Turn Off feature. I'll try see if WMP is causing troubles for dear Active X. Thanks!

Problem Solved. I didn't see WMP under 'Media Feature' section of Turn On/Turn Off feature. I initiated the set up and IE 8 shows Active X.

IE 8 can be disabled but WMP has to be enabled for WMV to work. Meanwhile, I guess I'll watch video using Winamp (I use it for music anyway).

Thank you very much! So far enjoying this new OS. I'll have to use RC for 4 months to receive Ultimate version from Microsoft, so I have no choice but for now :)

WMV video screen shows up on Chrome too (although it doesn't play).. is there way to play WMV videos on Chrome?

The Chrome browser is pretty much beta form at the present time. A lack of a codec pack or a need to convert the WMV files to another format like avi or mpeg II would be a thought while the problem is quite with the browser itself.

I haven't used Chrome that much simply from preferring IE 8 or Opera over it to start with. It still seemed to be an unfinished browser to begin with.

For localized viewing you would likely need to burn the videos you create to disk anyways. Depending on length that could be a video cd or dvd project using Nero, Roxio, or another program for that.

I've been running the RCs here since May especially the 64bit with the 32bit on virtual machine. This will be until 7 is out so I think we are both in the same boat there waiting for now under 2 1/2 months for the Ultimate edition no less! :D

Are you part of Windows Feedback Program for Windows 7 too? I actually installed RC few days ago so I'd have to wait more than 2 1/2 months :(

I was part of later Feedback Program for either Vista Ultimate or Office 2007 but I haven't heard anything. I've had Feedback Program 4.5 and 4.6 installed for more than 6 months. I'm not sure if MS will ship Win 7 Ultimate once my 4 months is up.
