Solved Add a file type to default programs in control panel

Win7 control panel offers a similar 'open file type with' dialog that is in XP.

However I've noticed that there is a problem with the extension MPEG4, MPEG-4. MPEG-4 filetype
does not appear on the list. There are options to 'change" but no "add" that I can see.

How can an additional file type be added? As is, I cannot select the proper program to open.

Although video compression and file container definition are two separate and independent entities of the MPEG-4 specification, many people incorrectly believe that the two are interchangeable. You can implement only portions of the MPEG-4 specification and remain compliant with the standard.

The MPEG-4 file format, as defined by the MPEG-4 specification, contains MPEG-4 encoded video and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)-encoded audio content. It typically uses the .mp4 extension.

The question was How do I add a file type?

I may have gotten the lingo incorrect. Just say how I add a file type.

MPEG-4 has two file associations, m4a & M4V.

You can try merging the reg entries in the above link to restore them.

I may have gotten the lingo incorrect. Just say how I add a file type.

Go to Control Panel then click Programs then click Defult Programs then click Associate a file type. Wait for the full list to propogate then go down the list and select your file extension. If it is not there the chances are that what you are looking for is not a valid ile extension.

I have found my error. Was looking at the wrong file type when I though I had made a change previous.

A simple flub.
