Solved Add another 4 gig ram to my HP PC?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6 3170
Specs: 500 Gbs hard disk
4 Gbs Ram
Intel Core i7
Windows 7 ultimate x64



I have 2 RAM slots, one has the 4 gig ram that came with the laptop, and the other is empty.

My question is: Can I buy a 4 gig ram and put it in? will the computer read it? or is it able to only use 4 gigs of ram max?

And if I can put in an extra ram, will that cancel my warranty?

Second, HP isnt the most forgiving when it comes to warranty.

If I were you and it is under warranty dont do it unless you are handy with tools and completely comfortable with it

For most people 4 gigs should be enough. Gamers, video editing, rendering, etc will need more.

More ram wont make your system any faster, it will just let you have more apps open at the same time.

I don't do video editing, but I see that the latest version of After Effects is 64 bit only.

If you are running a 64 bit version, going to 8GB may well be helpful to you.

The upgrade would be likeliest to work if both SODIMMs were identical. That'd be worth the extra $23 (at Crucial) to me.

I don't know how easy it is to get to the RAM in your laptop. I've seen some where one of the two sockets is accessed by removing the keyboard. That doesn't require superhuman abilities, but it makes it a lot likelier to damage the machine.

using the crucial memory finder was a smart move on your part,
i have used it many times for builds for my friends and it works fine
so i dont see a problem with adding more ram and i wouldn't worry
about a warranty issue with HP
