Add custom item to right side of start menu?

Hello all!

A new nit-picky OCD question for all you geniuses. Is it possible to add a custom item to the right part of the start menu, one that isn't a default option when using the standard customize menu? Specifically, I'd love to add the Network Connections control panel to that pane, but, I don't see how. . .

Hello Russell sorry mate but non genius here LOL!! I can only find

Start > right click on that area ( I take it you mean where Control panel and stuff is listed?) > Properties > Customise > scroll down that list and if it is there tick the radio button Network > OK > Apply and it adds that to that list in that strip.

To remove - just reverse that order

ICit2lolnailed it, there are many thing you can add to the right side of the Start menu. The Network one is not to the control panel(?) but the Network Connections page.

Thanks for the effort, but I only wish it was that easy. Using the "network" radial button adds a link to a completely different item than I want. The one I want to add is this one:

Sorry Russell can't help mate as I only have Network and Sharing Centre in my control panel and the best I can do is right click and create shortcut to desktop.

I thought maybe that could be dragged onto the taskbar but it cannot - as for that strip I am not sure how you would get what you want on it .

There probably is a way to do it via altering the registry entries but I am not familiar with doing that you will need to ask someone a lot cleverer than me

if there was a particular network adapter you wanted to access regularly you can right click the network adapter and create a shortcut on the desktop .right clicking the shortcut gives you different options like disable, open file location ( which will open the window you want .)
you could right click the shortcut and select properties and in the shortcut key select w or whatever,it will give you ctrl + alt +w as the shortcut keys. so no need for a start menu button.
i couldnt get the shortcut to pin to start menu or taskbar , so you would have to make do with the shortcut on desktop or keys. if you went with the keyboard shortcut you could move the shortcut from the desktop if you want it clean and then create the shortcut key from the new location you store the shortcut.
hope this makes sense.

Yes Bill I suggested that taskbar option but the drag from desktop to taskbar didn't work - well not for me.

use the alt menu (right click) and pick the location to pin it.

you only have two choices (Start menu or task bar) - you can't pin it to the right pane.

If it's pinned to the start menu, it's at least always in the left pane - you don't have to dig through the full menu

I turn off recent applications and pin things to the start menu or taskbar based on freq. of use - most used - taskbar, next things get pinned to the start menu. everything else I either use the start menu search or dig thru the start menus

This is a Registry hack that will give you right click access to the Network Connection folder by right clicking either the desktop Network Icon (if you have it on your desktop) or by right clicking the Network icon on the right side of the start menu:

Caution! Modifying the registry can damage your computer! Do a system restore first.

Now you'll see a Network Connections entry in the right click menu of the Network icon.

I greatly appreciate all the effort. I think I am content with just the shortcut, major registry changes simply for ocd convenience is way to finicky even for me!

I think you would be happy if the shortcut was pinned to the start menu in the area of the orange box (that is if you're not already doing that). You can even move the pinned item in the list (drag 'n drop)

To keep it clean I untick the "Keep recently used program on the taskber/startmenu properties.
