1. Did a complete fresh install of Windows 7 about a month ago.

2. Install previously downloaded hardware drivers.

3. Installed AV (Kaspersky Total Security)

4. Went online for the 1st time and did all the windows updates; check for and updated all hardware drivers.

5. Two Windows updated would not install...ran the WU Troubleshooter, rebooted now says all is well, those 2 updates still wouldn't go. Waited till I had some time, worked on troubleshooting it today

========================================

6. Started here, drilled down to 3rd step here:
Access Denied

Tried to rename software distribution backup folders, denied access. Tried renaming SoftwareDistribution folder at catroot2 as per this troubleshooter. Denied Access

So I did this ....
Can't rename softwaredistribution folder. - Microsoft Community

type "net stop wuauserv"
type "net stop bits"

Went back to rename catroot2 and access still denied.

7. Checked my user account ... says:

My Log in Name
Administrator
Password protected

8. Clicked "Change Account Type".... has the "Standard user" radio button active. Clicked Administrator and "Change Account Type"

9. Logged in with my Backup Administrator User Account .... same thing, can not change any account types.

10. Made Windows Hidden User Account visible ... same thing. All three Administrator Accounts say they are Administrator accounts but have Standard User radio button clicked. Tried yanking ethernet cable, and disabling AV, still can't change anything.

11. Ran netplwiz and the reference accounts are all listed as Administrators

12. Net localgroup administrators shows all accounts as administrators but all have "standard user" radio button highlighted

Suggestions ?

Hi JackNaylorPE,

Tried to rename software distribution backup folders, denied access. Tried renaming SoftwareDistribution folder at catroot2 as per this troubleshooter.

In order to rename the software distribution backup folders [because they are owned by the system and locked] you will need to stop the WU [Windows Update] service first. Then you will be able to rename them.

I hope this helps!

The WU problem it would seem is the secondary problem. Unless I address the Administrative Account problem, I can't complete the WU fix.... Hence the Thread Title Administrator Accounts Aren't

Hi JackNaylorPE,

5. Two Windows updated would not install...ran the WU Troubleshooter, rebooted now says all is well, those 2 updates still wouldn't go. Waited till I had some time, worked on troubleshooting it today.

Out of interest, what are the KB's of the two updates that will not install!

I tested and I got the same thing so I think that m$ designed the interface that way. As long as it looks like mine does you're good. What matters isn't what's selected when you open account type but what it says under your name. If you have professional or ultimate you can use computer management to check your account to be doubly sure.

Test New account.PNG

FYI I don't run an admin account all the time but a standard one. Just personal preference.

Its in another post on the forums ...

But the Windows Defender KB915597, and Monthly UpdateKB4480970. New one showed up today KB3126587 but haven't tried it yet. EDIT: It went in fine as did optional net framework

The admin thing is frustrating as it requires me to conform that I really wanna use half mu programs.

EDIT: Have a bunch of Optional Updates and, given the 'page last edited date, Im wondering why I am just seeing these now ?

KB3184143 - This update removes the Get Windows 10 app and other software related to the Windows 10 free upgrade offer that expired on July 29, 2016 (Last Updated: Apr 17, 2018). I blocked it so never had it.... so why does it keep popping up :)

KB3161102 - This update removes the Windows Journal component. We recommend that all users install this update immediately. (Last Updated: Sep 13, 2016)

KB3133977 - This article describes an issue in which BitLocker can't encrypt the drive and the service crashes in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) (Last Updated: Apr 24, 2017) ... never used BitLocker so will hide this one.

KB3080149 - This package updates the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices. (Last Updated: Sep 11, 2015) .... This is one I had hidden, no way to stop it from keep asking ? hadn't seen it pop up for quite some time.

KB3068708 - This package updates the Diagnostic and Telemetry service on existing devices. (Last Updated: Sep 11, 2015). As above

KB3021917 - This update performs diagnostics in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in order to determine whether performance issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. Telemetry is sent back to Microsoft for those computers that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). As above

Any suggestion on how to stop forum from adding 203 returns after every paragraph ... don't wanna strain anyone's scroll finger.

Well duh ... kinda makes sense that you can't change the account from Admin to Admin :) But that points to another problem ... why can't I rename catroot2 ? access still denied and can't complete the Windows Update troubleshooting steps.

Are you talking about the Windows Management Framework ? (yes W7Pro) ... never installed or used.
