My pc is set up with a SSD holding Win7 64 bit pro and programs. I then have 2 HDD, one just for backup and the holding al lthe user account info and user files i.e. I changed the default location for user accounts from the SSD to this HD. I wanted to upgrade the backup drive to new bigger drive, but didn't know which of the HHD was the backup. So I took the first one out and restarted and couldn't logon to any account as no profiles found. So put that HDD back and took the other one out expectit to work fine. However I now cannot access the Admin account as says "User profile servcie failed the logon". Oddly I can logon to my own non-adminstrator account no problem. If I try to do any things that require adminstrative priveledges it pops up the box, but throws an error when I type in the admin password.

I restarted in safe mode and tried logining into the Admin account. This sort of works except I get "c\windows\system32\config\system profile\destop not available. I can do things that need admin privledge like disk mangement, but cannot manage other accounts as was hoping to change my account to administrator or create new admin account. I found some stuff about editing the registry, but typing regedit does not bring up the registry editor.

I seem to now be stuck as cannot perform any task that requires admin priveldges. I'm surprised, but seems starting up withoutthe right HDD in place as completely confused the OS. I'm hoping there is an easy fix that doesn't involve something like a reinstall. I do backup every night, but not sure if that is helpful.

Thanks for any advice

Mike

Mike, I think your problem is that your windows critical files were stored on more than one hard disk. and you changed too many things.

Safe mode depends on several factors, one being that the login files are in the same place that windows wants them.
If your all backed up, I think it is time for a system image restore. Or a complete format and install.

At least in my opinion,

Rich
