Morning,
I have installed Windows 7 & just finished installing all the updates.
I have then partitioned the C drive.
So i now have the following,
C drive 200GB which is where i have installed Windows.
D drive 100GB which is where i would like to install the programmes etc that i wish to use.

My main reason for this is so should i need to install Windows again i wont have to the reinstall all my programmes.

The part i am now stuck with is where & how do i now advise the laptop to install on the D drive as opposed to the C drive.

This is my first time doing this so please be basic but so far all is good.

Many thanks.

Most program installers let you choose where to install during setup.

My main reason for this is so should i need to install Windows again i wont have to the reinstall all my programmes

It depends. If you do a clean install, the new installation won't know where anything is. A repair install would be ok, but it is not always feasible.

More usual is to have the os and installed programs on the same drive, and data on another.

I recommend you use an imaging program and make occasional images of your system which can be restored in case of disaster. Plenty of free versions out there. I suggest Aomei Backupper as very easy to use.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply.

It was a clean install,i mean i wiped what was there and started from scratch.
I have C drive & D drive,

If i have Windows on the C drive i though that i then had to install everything else on the D drive so should Windows become curropt etc i would only have to install windows again on the C drive & my installed items wouldnt be wiped etc ?

Is that how it works or am i getting confused.

Thanks

Hi,
The way it works is, once you have completed a clean install, you will need to install all your programs, either on C: or D: drives - that is up to you.
Once you have installed your programs, and activated any licenses, then you should (as SIW2 has suggested) clone, or otherwise make a system image backup of your main drives (C:, D:). That way, your programs will be saved together with the OS in any eventuality of of file damage, etc.
I am afraid you cannot install programs on one drive, then clean install the OS, and hope that the OS will pick up your programs, because program installation and registration does not work like that.
The way forward then, is to make a backup of your system + programs.

If you do a clean install, the new installation won't know where anything is.
That is because the registry entries and links pointing to the installed programs are in your old installation.

A new installation will not be aware of that.

The programs will still be on the other partition, but ( except one or two than might run portably ) they will not work.

Evening,
All updates have now been installed.
The software I wish to use has also been installed & updated.

Whilst I’ve been installing all the windows updated I’ve had the following BSOD.
BAD POOL HEADER X 3

BAD POOL CALLER X 1

SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION X 2

IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL X 1

Are these to be expected when doing what I’ve done ?
