The NH-D14 is a brilliant air cooler and it will fit a Haswell set up. Here's an instance of someone running an i7-4770k with the NH-D14 fitted.

I have a Noctua NH-D14 and have tried a lot of coolers. In my opinion the D14 is the best air cooler on the market. I tried a Corsair H100 and found, in my case, the D14 gave me 3C lower temps than the H100. But, be prepared, it's huge, but has to be to be efficient. No matter what cooler you get, it's a fact that to be efficient, it requires a lot of radiator area. If you look at some of the best air coolers, the D14, Silver Arrow and the larger Phanteks cooler, they are all about the same size. If you have room in your case, you can also add another 140mm fan on the end of the D14. The more intake case fans you have the better job any air cooler will do. Just my opinion, but most of the review sites rate coolers by ambient temps, which is wrong. While ambient is a factor, the cooler is inside the case, so it should be measured by the internal case air temps, because that's what the cooler is using to remove the heat.

If you go to Noctua's web site and look up the cooler, it has a list of what motherboards it will fit on and what ram you can use with it, but the cooler has 44mm of clearance for ram height. G Skill Ripjaws for example is 40mm tall and will fit fine. If you are going air cooling, the D14 is an excellent choice.

I know you said you want to go for an air cooler. but the d14 is like £60!! few more pennies and youd get a decent corsair all in one system!

then again I do have a personal issue with the gigantic heat sinks of today! I had an arctic freezer pro 7 back in the day and I thought it looked stupid! the d14 is MASSIVE!

It really is a Beast of a cooler and has an excellent mounting system.

My CPU is running decent temps with a Titan cooler at the moment, it's a decent cooler and isn't overly big. But with the space I have available I may well throw a DH-N14 in there to make temps even better.

I'm also tempted by the h80i to be honest, I love the look of them even though I'm not 100% happy about having liquid in my rig still!

Yes must have intake and exhaust for air through it's radiator. Space is a trade off as the radiators and fans are normally out of the path of key mobo components and the water pump is a very small add on to the CPU with it's mounting plates and then the water hoses to the rad.
