After CHKDSK, black screen with cursor

After I came back to logon after turning my computer on it was going through a CHKDSK. Knowing it hadn't been done in a while I let go thinking it would be done in about 30 minutes.

I was wrong and when I came back it was defaulting security permissions. This took upwards of a day and when it was complete I had a black screen with a cursor. I was able to move the cursor but that's it.

Booting into safe mode came with the same thing. So I went into system repair.
It said fixing hard disk something and then restarted back to the black screen again.
I ran it again for 3 times and it just finished in 5 seconds every time.

I open the command prompt in recovery and did a CHKDSK /r .
It ran for half a day fixed some more problems but came up with black screen again.
I tried SFC /SCANNOW and it replied system repair pending and wouldn't continue.

I'm currently stuck and would really prefer to not have to format and reinstall.
Help would be nice.

Please let us know if you have tried to run diagnostics on the harddrive to ensure it has not failed. Kindly update your system specs here by following this.

Can't run .exe files because I cant boot into Windows at all including safe boot. So I can't burn a Windows Defender Offline Disc because it starts with a .exe file.

Kindly post the results of the steps performed in the link above and results of them. Also, have you checked the harddrive of the system for errors.

If not then let us know which harddrive is installed on the system so we can run the respective diagnostics for them.

Sorry for the late reply, but the problem is from my aging system.

The hdd is repeatedly screwing up OS (from WIN 8 to WIN 7) every few months. Would any other aging hardware also speed up it up and I did all the steps I was able. Mostly to do with the start up repair and cmd. I still need to do the bootrec but as I'm able to boot past the windows loading screen that shouldn't matter?

At the moment I'm re installing Windows 8 on a partition on a separate hard drive. What test should I do to check everything out? I know one of my RAM Modules are failing but I'm unsure which one and I need to keep this computer running until I can afford to either buy new parts or buy a completely new one.

Hi Pheoxy,

You should check the system on one memory and check if it causes the issue and then on the other one. This should help you isolate if it is an issue with which one of the memory on the system.

This could be caused due to the faulty harddrive as well. Kindly run diagnostics on the harddrive and let us know the results.

If you are not sure of the diagnostics then kindly let us know which harddrive is installed on the system so we can advise you of the correct diagnostics.

I know it's really late to reply on this thread but I hope it help out those who came here for solution! lol

So, the problem is the CHKDSK Replacing invalid security id with default security id/Defaulting the security id.
I think this only work for those who encounter Black Screen with Cursor after CHKDSK defaulting the security id

1) Press F8 when the startup screen load.

2) Go to "Repair your computer" and press enter

3) Then , Open up the Command Prompt

4) In the command prompt type ICALS c:\ /grant everyone:F /c /t (this may take about an hour to complete.. Just wait )
Note: you can replaced c:\ with other for giving access to the file(eg :ICALS d:\ /grant everyone:F /c /t)

5)Reboot your PC

I know this topic is old now but yesterday I had the same problem and the solution above did the job. I just wanted you to know that the right command should be ICACLS, not ICALS
