After install the DVD drive no longer works

Hi there, I am hoping someone might be able to help me.

I am working on a Sony Vaio VGN-CS11S/Q and I have recently installed Windows 7 on the machine.

The install itself was routine with no problems, however, once completed I wanted to install a game, I popped the disc in the drive and nothing happened - in fact the DVD drive was missing altogether from the my computer screen.

I have had quite a good search and found a couple of potential fixes, however nothing I have tried has worked so far. The fixes I have tried includes deleting upper and lowerfilters through the regedit.

The device manager was showing the DVD drive with an exclamation mark on - the problem is a code 10 error?
But the DVD drive is now missing from the device manager altogether.

The DVD drive is a Mat****a DVD RAM UJ870BJ.

sorry if it sound obvious, but we have to start somewhere , have you looked on the sony site for chipset drivers, firmware upgrades etc for your particular model?

also did you install off the dvd drive in the first place?

Hi there - yeah, I have checked and I have the latest driver and I did install off the windows 7 cd I got.

I have restarted the computer and the device is showing in the device manager but the device status is showing: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I spoke to Sony yesterday, but they said as I got the update software from Amazon they class that as buying third party software and have said they can't help me!!!

Its official Windows software and its all above the law - I just can't get the dvd drive to work.

I don't mind reverting to Vista if I have to but if the DVD drive doesn't work I can't boot from the start up DVDs

the reason i asked about the dvd drive is that i'm confused as to why windows 7 was quite happy to be installed from the drive, but doesn't want to know it afterwards. i don't doubt for a minute that it's legit.

it's a bit drastic going back to vista - stick around the forum for a while, there are lots of hardware experts about here who may be able to help with your win 7 problem.

also the dvd drive should still work fine to boot up your vista startup discs if need be, as windows 7 isn't running at boot time...

How could I do this if the DVD drive isn't working? Surely the startup discs won't be found if the drive isn't working?

Apologies, I use my computes for a few bit of work and I really need the dvd drive to work!!

i'm sorry, but i understood that the dvd drive is not working only when you are inside windows 7.

when you first turn on your computer, at boot time, windows 7 has not been loaded yet, and your computer's bios should still be able to detect the presence of your dvd drive, and you should be able to boot from your vista startup discs.

...unless of course a coincidental physical hardware failure occurred just after you installed windows 7 that is, which seems a little unlikely, but exists as a slim possibility. fiddling around inside laptops is trickier than messing about with desktop pcs, so it really should be taken to a computer engineer, if the drive itself is physically faulty.

I am doing this and Installing Windows 7 again now.

I will let you know how I get on - is there anything I should be wary of?

I think we are there now...I did a clean install and although I am just running my updates the DVD is now showing in My computer!

Hi I am experiencing the same problem with my ACER Aspire 5783G laptop. The first time i reformatted to Windows 7 from Vista, the DVD drive was slowing down and also lagging quite a bite. Therefore i resided back with Vista. i thought this was a one off thing so after a couple of months when my vista was working perfetly with the laptop, i formatted with win 7 and now it does not read at all.

Please help with this problem :S
