After SFC system won't boot

I was having some occasional program crashes on a W7 x64 machine, and decided to do a SFC. It went well, found stuff and "repaired" them on the next boot. But the next boot showed only a working mouse cursor and nothing else. No keyboard commands were honored. Had to force a shut down. Same thing in Safe Mode.

Last known good configuration changed nothing. So I did a system restore and am back in Windows. But I seem to be stuck. The utility which is supposed to fix Windows, SFC, breaks it. Does anyone know a way around this? I would like to avoid a reinstall if possible.

Thought: maybe SFC in WinRE?

Hi Paul,
try a system repair using a W7 SP1 disc, NO loss of personnal data.

Or
shoot over to the BSOD subforum, read the tutorial post the logs.

Hi torchwood. You mean a repair install? I have progs on this machine I'd like to keep, and don't have any of the installation materials. Otherwise I'd wipe the whole thing and start over.

Thanks. Actually, I should have said that the version of Windows, Ultimate, came without a disk or key. I don't think Windows will install Home Premium over Ultimate, though I'm not sure.

IAC, I bit the bullet and did a fresh install of HP, and lost MSO in the process. Problem solved, at a cost.
