hi guys, i reinstalled my windows HDD (a WD) into my htpc after leaving the HDD on the shelf for two years. now it won't boot into windows, all it displays on the screen is that it failed to start windows. nothing has changed on the host machine ( a HP Pavilion Elite d5100t) besides adding a SSD with Linux in the machine and the linux OS runs without any issue.

I tried the repair option prompt at the beginning of windows boot but it's of no help.

Not what you want to hear:
In the last couple of decades, there is just one brand of hard drive that I've had to trash. It was WD.
I used to just send them back to WD for a replacement, but the replacements were refurbs and usually worse than the one I sent in. So now when I get a WD* that fails, it goes in the Trash.

* I only get failed WD's from customers. I won't use them myself, and have not for many years.

One thing you might try, is cleaning the contacts on the power and data plugs. And check the controller card, for signs of dirt buildup or corrosion. If any is found, clean it.

Good luck,
TM
