HELP!

I hope this is the correct place to post this ... *If not, please tell me which sub-forum would be suitable.

I assumed I need help with the update as the problem occurred after I did 9 important updates. *I read your suggestions so here is my responses: *All 9 (see step 3 error codes) Installed successfully, so there are no error codes to report. *I cannot download SURT as there is now no Internet access since the updates were installed!

Details follow:

After having just installed on my Laptop i5 computer running OS x64 WIndows 7 Professional---- 9 important updates (I always wait a while before doing that in case something is wrong for others to find the error and make a patch). *These were from 11-13-13 (at least that is the date they were downloaded into the computer waiting for me to manually install them by pressing Install button on the shutdown box).

Of course I'm having trouble! *Everything went fine with the download/installing process until I tried to use the web....
I tried many times using Windows Explorer 10, but I also tried Chrome and lost all my prior browsing sessions which I try to retain as both IE 10 and Chrom browsers said it could not find an internet connection.

It automatically launched the Windows troubleshooter.....(or maybe I did it I don't remember at this point)....

Windows Troubleshooter says "Troubleshooting has completed"
"Troubleshooting was unable to automatically fix all of the issues found. *You can find the details below"
"Problems found"
"Diagnosis of the problem is not possible"
And worst of all the troubleshooter began all by itself as Windows announced: *"this device is broken"!!!

The Connection graph on right side task bar shows not only mine but all of my neighbor's *wi fi connections saying all are working and says both of mine are working (I have both wi fi regular "3" and the newer "5" *band/dual band wireless broadband connection. *I transferred back and forth between them and still I cannot get even the Microsoft.com page to load!

Therefore, how can I go to Microsoft.com to search for "solutions" or ask for help???

It took a while to figure out how to get this message out to you... my other computer is a old old Apple which of course is not allowed to visit and post on those Microsoft Community pages....

I was given several options by Windows troubleshooter: *contact a friend (who? *Locally, I'm the one people ask me about their computer problems!), Or, go online and ask for help... *well that's impossible now! *Or contact the Microsoft Windows Community *(with my Apple computer? *no way!)..

I have restarted the laptop several times. *Tried even ctl/alt/del method and power button methods of suddenly cutting it off so maybe it would do a self-test or something to fix itself, but comes back everytime with full bars on the internet symbol on the bottom task area, yet says it cannot find the internet anymore.....

I'm happy to know of your Forum which helped me in the past, and hoping that someone out there can understand all of these English worded error messages without my usual screen shots or details as I cannot get the information off the computer other than by physically typing it here..... and guide me without remote access to the computer or tell me what to do to restore web access so I can fix this!

Unfortunately I can't *"telephone" the web for help anymore like we used to do back in the dial up days.... Its all broadband cable only.

Thanks!

XP VM USER (Sorry about the name;;; *I never thought about it, I can't change my User name from last time and can't double register due to your rules about one registration per Email address) apologies for the errant "*" marks I am not using a word processor at all to post...

I think your best route of action at this point is to do a system restore back to before it installed the updates; as those updates may not necessairly be suitable for your system. Just because microsoft puts out updates via windows update; doesnt always mean they are compatible with your system. I would do a system restore to before you updated all 9 items; and if you can; upload or post what those 9 items are and we can go from there.

Sorry - but that's just not true.
Windows Update is designed to check the available updates against each component (hardware and software) for applicability and ONLY offer those that are appropriate for that system.
It's then up to the system admin to decide how to deal with each update, or to accept the blanket 'install Important updates only', 'Install all updates' or other options.

Thank you for the request

Thank you Noel Paton for the Windows posting instructions.... Unfortunately, without an internet connection on the computer I can't create a CBS.zip file and "paste" it onto the Forum here as that computer is off the internet! I can't use SURT as similarly I can't download anything into the computer as my iPad 1 does not have that ability!.... and I'm only pasting the screenshots one by one, as I have an alternative route for Email which I get off the Laptop embedded images only. I hope your Forum page accepts those types of files or maybe I'll have to convert them once I get them here---been trying to beat the system for hours now.... I have many screenshots so might have to post it in two replies hope that is not too difficult to follow, I wrote the responses already to both of your and matt's postings.
Again, thank you for your patience, I never had a problem trying to communicate with a help forum without having an active Internet connection!

You should still be able to run the SFC scan - and then extract the SFCDetails to a text file which you can export to your Apple computer and post here...
To create the SFCDetails file, At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

This will create the text file on the desktop - if you can't export it to your Apple, then open it in Notepad, and take snaps of the last few lines. This will give us something to work on, at least.

Can you not download the CheckSUR tool to another computer and copy it to a USB stick, and run it from there?

Response with screenshots of more information

Hi everyone who replied!

First, Thanks!

Second, more thanks for having a discussion between yourselves about which procedure is best for my situation.

I hope all of you can weigh in on the problem---don't be discouraged.

Before I give you some screenshots let me explain (whew it gets long---you can jump to screenshots if you just want to see them, but read the stuff I wrote after that about System Restore please, thanks!)

1. I always 20+ years take screenshots of everything Microsoft especially updates into my computer for exactly this reason as this is a clear way to know "what" they installed and "why" they say it was important i.e. I access kb if I"m really suspicious but nothing here was unknown to me so I didn't do that this time......Far quicker and easier than trying to find that "history screen" see later screenshot of it, showing every single download I ever did.

2. I found out I had also received a VAIO request for a download and since it was only one item and since I've done it before I did it before doing the "restart" of the computer.... I usually trust SONY's VAIO stuff more than Microsoft as I spoke to them about it when they first did this and they assured me its only for my model FM111 etc computer so there is no problems ever with their stuff----so I still manually do it so I can screenshot photo it of course, but other than that I just press "sure" for install every time....

3. Here are the Screenshots in numerical order (not necessarily the order they were done except for the 9 successful updates)....

Ok so they appear at the end... pretend they appeared here....

.........
........

.........
-------------
Concerning the last screenshot I included....

I have continually received this screen ever since WIndows 7 was installed. I read an article on your Forum today that mentioned I should tell Microsoft about it and they would give me a "free" new disk. I've not only TOLD them 100's of times but spend hours on web continually proving its genuine and have reset it 100's of times.

So now I just ignore it as I know it eventually goes away by itself and self reports at the bottom of the screen "your product is genuine!" So just letting you know of all "issues" that might impact upon whatever you are trying to do, so happy it appeared again so I could take a screenshot and send it out too. I got the Software from the major computer store shelf!!! that I purchased the SONY computer from and they installed it ---clean install removing the cheap Home Edition entirely...never used it one minute with that one in it as I need the power and VM etc of the Professional WIndows 7.

----------------------

Back to the original thread!

I wonder.....if I did a System Restore (I've never never ever done it myself, always had this under warranty and by remote or Microsoft people or some repair person did it for "free" and that beats my trying to type in code to repair Registry errors or system restore back......

So my question is... after computer came "on" I did not use the internet! (Am I supposed to use "every possible device" on this each time I do a new program update or install? I'd never get anything done as there is lots of devices added here any one of which could additionally have presented problems except... during this one all were disconnected and turned off as I always do for major WIndows 7 updates---have not tried them out yet as some need an internet connection..

I was typing in Email offline.. I was typing Jarte Documents Word Pad documents, and I needed to look something "up" so I turned on internet finally just to google a question and bam! that's when I found out I had no internet...

I did all the screenshots on the third or fourth run through so maybe they are not in perfect order as I was capturing them to show to somebody in some forum or help place.... sorry if jumbled up a bit....

Thanks!

I see you have attempted to get System Mechanic installed - I would suggest uninstalling it, as it can be worse than any problems that it may chance to cure.
You also appear to have NAV installed? you should uninstall it and run the Norton Removal tool...

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
then post an MGADiag report.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Thank you! Wonderful suggestions.. need some help here...

Putting on a thinking cap (or pointy dunce cap ----if I seem like I'm asking stupid questions I'll try to explain and get this off to you across the "pond" since I see you're online now (btw 1/16 scottish if that helps any)...

Not splicing the quotes correctly.... see my replies inside the Quote Box below!

I see you have attempted to get System Mechanic installed - I would suggest uninstalling it, as it can be worse than any problems that it may chance to cure.

Yes, guess who did it... Microsoft Technician recommended it for my XP computer so I put it in here as it allows multiple users in one family... I have many many negative responses about it (see "wrench in the works" et al since 2010) but just as many people swear by it and show me how it works.... I do not and never use it by myself and since the Technician never was helping me on Windows 7 as my telephone and remote help expired long ago before I got it, its only downloaded never ran it here on this laptop.
I use Norton for all my Registry problems which Microsoft tech said never let any other program other than System Mechanic do it! Also Dell and another company see it on computer so they take advantage and run it (I am always suspect about automatic things other than Norton's which I used for decades, so I don't like running these very automatic things) If you say remove it, ok but I just signed up for renewal of it and they helped me install it (but not to run it), so its like catch-22 if I keep doing this.....installing and uninstalling while waiting for the definitive answer should I use it or not... meanwhile the registry is not cleaned out and other minor minor problems occur which I have to handle one by one slowly using Norton's programs.

You also appear to have NAV installed? you should uninstall it and run the Norton Removal tool...

See above... Why do this? Won't my computer be vulnerable to hackers and others trying to get into it? Its a windows computer.. I'm near a school.. Norton keeps telling me how many dozen times a day I get malicious trojans/ worms, etc try to hack into system and they quarantine it all...

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
then post an MGADiag report.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

See above... same downloading problem with the MGADiag tool, how to get it into a machine that is offline?

(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

COA stands for???__________(Certificate of Authenticity! I got it !)

Its a laptop.. It came with Windows 7 bottom of the barrel home basic installed... if there is a sticker anywhere on the machine it would say that... I have a separate (non OEM) retail version of the Windows Professional 7 I purchased... I can tell you that version but since it has been updated I went into the Windows OS and copied off by hand (remember I can't cut and paste to anything on that computer anymore that can leave it)....

Here is what is says::: under "About Windows" (wireless printer, I also can't print unless I hooked it up to USB directly which I did to get these numbers correctly re-typed here).... Windows 7 Professional Version 6.1 (Build 7601 Service Pack 1) Copyright 2009.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
How to Tell ? Hardware

I have a COA? Certificate of Authentity on the original box I saved (retail edition), It only says the following:

Two bar codes with numbers under them one maybe UPC code..

Third line... A string of figures and Letters does not appear to be my personal Product code, do you want that?

Win Pro 7 English VUP US Only DVD
MADE IN PUERTO RICO
FOR DISTRIBUTION IN US ONLY

(on right far side under UPC code.... ) SKU FQC-0013C

If you think its safe to quote any of the number sequences I left out above I can do it if that helps you to search to see if I'm using the right box.... Just noted.. this is an "upgrade" box from Windows Vista.. I guess economically at the time we got that as the store gave us a "free" Vista download and install in the computer for 15 mintues before "upgrading" it to Windows Professional or maybe its also upgradable from Home Basic, but outside of box does not say so... I usually am allowed in the back rooms to see them working but as luck would have it the day we came to get the particular laptop we had ordered, my person who knows me was off that day and someone else did all this.. 20/20 hindsight as they also messed up seriously my VM installation as it was the first download and install of the VM program addition that store had ever done since Windows 7 was brand new back then.... But they had Microsoft on the phone and I had to give permission for Microsoft to generate and give them the Product keys etc necessary as I was not installing it myself... Yes a lot of details... but later on I spent a long time here trying to figure out why my VM was not working with XP! which is one of the reasons I purchased Professional 7 versus another version....

Norton is renowned for causing problems under certain circumstances, and so long as you limit your internet usage, you should be OK for a while at least until we can get the system up on its own two feet again :) It also tends to try getting in the way of many of the tools we may end up needing to use. Once Windows is showing as genuine again, you can install MSE for free until the installation is purring again, and then decide what to do.

As regards System Mechanic - I personally regard it as close to malware, and certainly as overpriced scareware.
Registry cleaners are ALL dangerous beasts, and should be avoided unless you know enough about the registry not to need to use them :) Most of the rest of SM is a skin over existing Windows capabilities.
Any such program which requires regular assistance from the creators for installation is obviously either not competently written, or being corrupted (or corrupting the OS) while in use.

OK - so you are using a retail Upgrade to Pro on this installation? - in which case you won't have a COA for it, but a Proof of License label inside the packaging (an orange sticker on a card usually, with your Product Key on it and not a lot else - we don't need any of the stuff from the case, and only the last five characters from the Key to check against what the MGADiag report gives us in case something has corrupted it)

Yes, found the orange card with windows symbol and Product key and......
Oh my! Its all crossed out!!! Seems in January 2012 I had another spot of trouble and Micosoft (still had free help then for Windows 7) and they had me create a brand new Product Key for this which I have listed and used since then..... So would the MAGDiag program show the original key only? Or this new Product Key? hmmmm the plot thickens!

By the way, how did we ever do long downloading in pre-100% connectivity internet days of dial up (where I would get interrupted by phone calls) ? I don't have or see a easy to accomplish method of downloading to a laptop desktop especially if I have no internet??

I had this (no internet situation) a number of years ago on my XP system, and could not use public computers as they refused to let me "download" anything as it might have a virus.. could not go to "Kinkos" etc computer places where they had computers for rent as the same prohibition applies..

As for using a "friend's" computer, last time they shied away once they heard I was doing the download to "fix" my computer.. so they did not want to download anything into their computer even from Microsoft...

I also have and use Norton Ghost 15.0 for my backup system (which has its own problems but have not had time to address them to Norton yet)...... If I use the Norton Removal tool to remove that Ghost then all the backups I've done on a 500GB HD will be "corrupted" as well, as using that Norton Removal Tool (I have done this before on other systems) seems to remove everything named Norton..... I checked out the site using iPad again its not allowing me to download so have to figure out a sneaky way to get anything into this laptop.....

Can I run MGADiag first and see what happens before trying to remove Norton if its going to cause me more hours on the phone with Norton people to try and reinstall it all back again (keep forgetting my Norton etc account passwords as I don't keep them in the computer ever!)

While I'm replying to your latest response, what does: paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
mean? Is there a way for me to reply to my own message rather than yours? I only get one button that says post reply in orange here which opens up the editor window ----maybe its a button that iPad 5.0 iOS can't detect???

Sure - the MGADiag should be informative :)

Thanks again....

Working on that---holiday is best time for this to have broken I can devote time to it straight through...

BTW I just noticed you too are a VM user---had lots of problems with that system and finally moved off to OracleVirtualBox for XP, Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion (still stuck on that one!) So might pick your mind at the end or start a new thread if you don't mind....

Got the MGADia program and going to try to transfer it to the Laptop and follow the directions after that...

Trying to follow directions---encountered a few snags

Hi there again..

Hope I'm not being a nuisance...
I went to the Microsoft site and I'm using Omni Browser as Safari 4 no longer operates on the Internet since the OS is Tiger and its really rejected by most places on the web.....

But when I clicked on your link in the quote here::

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

A new window for OMNI Web tries to open for one-millionth of a second too fast to see anything and it closes and that's that! I've tried again and again ----trying cut and paste and all are the same, something is preventing me from going to that download site, maybe its because like most of Microsoft site it detects I'm using a Apple/Mac and refuses to let us view KB's or Join the Community when I needed help for my disabled PC running various Windows over the years... the curse and benefits of being a "two computer" user, both MAC & PC (actually a bit more complicated with all the others I had at work, but you got the idea).....

Question: Am I copying or clicking on the right link? I bolded it (its not hyperlink) above for you.....

Also... I checked the link out and got the following message: Link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 is not valid.
Microsoft Genuine Advantage forums > Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Windows XP)

Question: is there a spelling or spacing error I did in copying the link?

Code:
------------------------------
Concerning the SFC scan process:
When I typed it in (hopefully I typed with correct spacing as no way to copy & paste it as no common word processor between the Mac & PC) To create the SFCDetails file, At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

I got the following response:
FINDSTR: Cannot open C: \windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Question: What should I try next in that category to get the SFCDetails file for you?

--------------------------

I've also Downloaded and cross-linked the SURT File from the Mac to PC

Ran it and it said: "Do you want to install the update Hotfix for windows? " Yes/No no way to chekc the KB which is (KB947821) first like I want to..... So I said "yes" and it installed it

Its finished its "job" now what? No button to press, nothing.....

----------------
I reread the entry discussion about proper preparation for help with Windows Update : i.e. here:Quote:"Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data"

and it says I could scan with SFC/scannow, but it warns will change themes and other things (whew! I have no idea how many things were altered for my benefit by others remotely or Microsoft technicians over the years.. I know I hate the "Aero" look so someone has the theme set back to Vista for me.. I guess that is one thing I'll lose and have to figure out how they did it and re do that, but how to keep track of all the different things that could have been changed and scan now would revert it all back..

I know I know.. its the risk reward of using computers, have to try things to fix them, but when you fix one area you may undo another..... I spend decades balancing resources of old Win 95/98 so I'm aware of the problems, just thought by now (Windows 7) someone might have figured out a better way to do things!

Thanks again!! Have a good evening/night there...

P.S. I should remember, but I handle too many different OS's..... Of course I have the MGADiag program, some Microsoft etc technician installed it on my Desktop years ago... I got it out and ran it and here is the result..... (I read my new Product Key with the last 3 groups of the Product Key shown and they matched so I 'yyy" ed it out ---so you know I did that not the program)

Interesting that you got the MGADiag executable from an MS Techie - so far as I know, you have to get to 3rd-level support before they've even heard of it, let alone know how to read it :)

The report shows no problems - although the system appears not to have been validated since 3rd August (or is it 8th March? :s)

This would imply that as expected, the non-genuine problem is likely to be a race-condition the most likely cause of which is anti-virus or other security software getting in the way of the Software Protection Service.

SFC will not usually make changes to system options or themes, unless non-compliant hacks have been used to put them in place. It's designed to check for the existence of a given set of files, and that the files are the proper ones. It will then attempt to replace any corrupted files with originals from the winsxs backup system, and repair broken hardlinks. It then flags any files it was unable to find/correct/replace.

Without at least the SFCDetails extract of the CBS.log - but preferably a complete CBS.log encompassing an SFC scan - we really have no idea what system corruption is present.

Ah yes.... first comment you made.. therein lies a story....

I got it for the Windows 7 through a long route, but it all began with my XP Computer and Windows Genuine Advantage.... I'm almost the only one in USA/World whose computer (after spending 2 years with Microsoft engineers by phone/mail in Redmond----was being damaged by WGA and told I had to toss a $3000 computer and buy a new one with no other option.. so I got things that were needed to investigate problems then and now....

About the SFC system changes I'm just reading what Windows Seven Forum says I quote:

LONG QUOTE: "
How to Repair Windows 7 System Files with System File Checker

Information
The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.

Tip
If you get the Windows Resource Protection Could Not Start the Repair Service error when trying to run SFC, then make sure that the Windows Modules Installer service is enabled and set to Manual.

Services - Start or Disable

Warning
Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state. Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc /scannow."

I have no idea what I "did" as never knew I'd be doing something that would revert things back.. Of course I have backups but the idea of replacing almost 400 GB in a HD with 400 GB just to fix my windows "themes" or other small items that were tweaked over the past four years sounds crazy to me.... and if SFC does "fix" something.... all I get by reverting back to whatever I had (i.e. Vista theme etc), is the same problem of no Internet I'm faced with now.. so seriously considering not doing that...

Sorry to be all against your suggestions but I tend to be the one who reads the fine print before I try anything ... that's why my updates take so long I wait and read the screenshots I make before taking the leap of faith and installing anything new... Seems no one else mentioned this (but one or two in Seven Forum have noticed no internet but reading their stuff, its older reasons not something that occurred between November 13 and today....

Finally, I repeat my question.... as I did decide to try the SFC Scan even knowing I might lose a lot of settings... but
but...

You read my last post.. so here it is again--the Question:

QUOTE: "When I typed it in (hopefully I typed with correct spacing as no way to copy & paste it as no common word processor between the Mac & PC) To create the SFCDetails file, At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

I got the following response:
FINDSTR: Cannot open C: \windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Question: What should I try next in that category to get the SFCDetails file for you?
"

So what should I do now to get you that all important CBS.log file? I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks again for reading all my musings about the problems!....

P.S. I've always wondered.. and my last Latin class was in High School (here in the US most schools don't generally give classical teachings like other countries give, so can I ask what your words:

Noel Paton - Nil Carborundum Illegitemi mean???

Ah - sorry, I missed that.

Usually, it's not a problem but it may be that the file is locked for access somehow (it usually is, but generally there's still access for that command).

Try copying the CBS.log file to the desktop -if/when it eventually works then run the following command...

findstr /c:"[SR]" %userprofile%\Desktop\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

If you can't do it in Normal Mode, try Safe Mode.

puzzlement

:confused:A search of my computer produced: "No items match your search" I entered CBS.log in search box... where is it hiding that my search feature can't find it.. I know I've removed the "blue" protection long ago for "viewing these files on C drive may harm your computer" or some type of warning they only give you once when you have a new computer/windows.. Hope you remember what that was..
Anyway.... my C drive is open and accessible/ including hidden files, so how to find the file now?

No Emoticon on this Forum for "head scratching".....

Here is my screenshot of what is currently in the C: \Windows\Logs\CBS folder:

What application/ PC/Mac opens up those CBS Persist files to view? Is it worthwhile looking in them? Which ones or all? do you want to view?

Ok I figured it out... extracted to notepad and copied over to a word processor to count how big a file it is ... would you believe.... 9,850 pages if I printed it out!!!!
That's just one of the 5 CBS Persist files (mostly dated 12-11-13 for some reason....maybe I was uber busy with computer work that day).. :)
