No matter what sound scheme I choose all system sounds are a low frequency click.

If I open a wav file and select play from the context menu I hear what I would expect, but when I apply that wav file (e.g. a chiming bell) to say System beep - all I hear is the click!

Other programs - like my PIM can use the same wav files and produce the expected sound - its only Windows that is stuck on this barely audible click for everything.

Perhaps imageres.dll is corrupt. Try running SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt and check the console for messages.

SFC found nothing - but I found part of the problem - I had system sounds set off in Volume Control mixer (slider all the way to the bottom)

So... back to the actual problem

Had to buy a new keyboard in a hurry - the old one decide the Alt keys were sleep buttons  Silly me said - okay, so lets get a wireless one.

The wireless one doesn't have any LEDs so I went to Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use and ticked the Turn on Toggle Keys boxes - and all I get is this barely audible tone.

So the real question is - can I change the 'tone' that's played when I press Caps, Num or Scroll Lock, to something I can hear above ambient noise ?
