Alternatives for CCleaner

I have uninstalled CCleaner because personally I think it has become a joke since being taken over by Avast. From what I can see it does very little to what it used .

So has anyone got any ideas on what can be used now to do the same things that it used to??

Hi ICIT2LOL,

Like yourself, I have used CCleaner for years and have always been pleased with its results. I don't use the registry cleaner part of it by the way.

The other one that I use in conjunction with CCleaner is Glary Utilities (also available in a FREE edition and is quick). It does pretty much the same thing and also includes a nice disk defrag.

However, I found that if I run CCleaner first it makes Glary Utilities a little bit faster, probably because most of the junk has already been cleaned by CCleaner. I mainly use the Clean Up & Repair > Disk Cleanup and Privacy & Security > Track Eraser, along with the Optimize & Improve > Disk Defrag.

I think it is very worth your while to have a look.

Out of interest, what aspects has put you off CCleaner?

I'm still using it. Haven't seen any changes, at least for what I do which is the "Cleaner" function. Just make sure you uncheck the Avast install box when you install or upgrade CCleaner.

I haven't done an upgrade which is why I haven't seen a change as yet then!

You should use CCEnhancer with cCleaner, it adds a lot more options.

Yep I get what you mean and I use the reg cleaner bit or used to but am disappointed with the features now see pic much less that it used to have and the Enhancer well I never had much luck with it as I couldn't see what it was doing. So I am just relying on manulaly cleaning browsing history etc and doing a Disk cleanup.

Anyway I shall have a look at Glary and the System ninja options and see what they are like

I don't see anything in the Professional or Professional Plus that I need or don't have. I already have Speccy and Recuva and I don't need a disk defragger as I use SSD's. I don't want to automatically clear browser history.

I don't know what the "Cleans Everywhere" means - could just be a marketing scam.

ICIT2LOL, why don't you consider downgrading your software (if you were happy with the earlier versions) ? I'm using an older version & have no intentions of upgrading CCleaner - it does the job perfect for me. I'm using 5.36.6278, it has all the options I used in the earlier versions, with the addition of finding other browsers in my system as well, the older version didn't include some of my browsers unlike this version.

clearing history in browser automatically after exit can be sent manually in some of the browsers too like FF.

I agree, if it ain't broke don't mend it.
It would be quite easy to get the version of CCleaner immediately prior to it being taken over or the version you were happy with.
Then just make sure you disable automatic updates.

Couldn't agree more but I just updated after that scare they had with CCleaner and it just seems to me that it has never been the same since Avast got their hands on it but that is my own personal view. I am not saying that no one should use it just that I don't want to unless it changes hands again.

It just seems to me that the good softwares that prove to be popular and are good are bought up by larger fish inthe sea and I just think they are never the same and the same could be said for a lot of other things not just software.

I couldn't agree more!
Unfortunately, this is the way things are now.
It is the high tech society that we live in and the fast pace and expections of life itself.
This along with individuals setting themselves expectations that could possibly be beyond them will cause added pressures and downfalls.
Bring back the good old days.

Well not too old Paul but I know what you mean but the thing is I think it is not so much a point that technology is creeping forward and creeping is quite an apt term for what I see as being ownership by stealth but in the main it is driven I think by greed.

Given that we are now in the age of an "open book" approach as in Windows 10 for example I feel less than happy using some of the newer stuff especially if as I said it has been taken over by some conglomerate that has steamrollered over some great but small companies to the detriment of that companies great product, and I feel that CCleaner is just one example.

It sort of leaves you wondering who will own everything eventually and that is a distinct possibilty I reckon.

Sorry to be such a pessimist but being very cynical now I have to think that way. Frankly I am surprised that some versions of Linux applications have not been "turned" by the pressures of financing the technology

Check out System Ninja. I use that and Ccleaner. System Ninja WILL find temp files Ccleaner won't. I can guarantee it. In System Ninja, don't check off to clear folder config files. It's unchecked by default for a reason. Only use it if you need or know what you are doing.

Apparently, if you check that off and use a non-English language, it'll reset it to English and mess with the context menu.

It may do other things I'm not aware of, but since they are config files it may be how you have settings for folder views, etc. So I wouldn't touch it.
