AMD display driver keeps failing

So I just upgraded my graphics card from a radeon HD5450 to a radeon HD6670. I uninstalled old drivers and installed all the new drivers for the new card. Now I keep getting this message "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered." The screen will get little pixle squares all over and freeze up then shoot to a black screen for a few seconds. when the system come to that error message pops up. It happens usually when i'm just surfing the web or playing solitaire.

What in the world is going on. I updated my BIOS Power supply is more then adequate, i'm at a loss and just want to get this fixed. I read up on it being a TDR issue but nothing seems to fix it.

p.s - It has happened 4 times while writing this post.

Re-check the physical connection of the GPU...to make sure it's fully seated. Next make sure the power connections, whether it's one or two power cables, are fully seated and not connected to a molex adapter.

The card is seated properly i took it out and installed. There is no power connection for it just the pci e x16 connection.

Hello Brendan. Normally when an external card is installed onboard graphics switches off. Still, to be on safer side can you manually disable your onboard graphics and check? Also, if you have multiple memory sticks, try running your PC with just single RAM stick. Try running memtest as well to check any errors with the RAM.

P.S Can you also tell us, how did you uninstalled your old drivers. I mean did you use driver sweeper to completely remove the old drivers and then install new ones. If you have not done this, then uninstall old drivers. start PC in safe mode and run driver sweeper and then install new drivers.

If the TDR fixes didn't work through the Registry it is a shot card I had to RMA a Diamond HD6870 for the same reason failed so much it got ridiculous

So i got tired of it got in touch with Diamond and they said in the end it was a faulty GPU

So if none of the fixes applyed any help it's time to RMA the card and get a new from the Supplyer

Yep. If you exhaust all possible software options, TDR errors certainly can point to a faulty GPU.

If it also starts bluescreening with x116 errors, RMA it.


Have you tried running in safe mode for an extended period of time? (safe mode with networking so you can still use the net)

The card will run off the generic VGA driver which eliminates all possible catalyst driver related errors. If the card causes problems in safe mode - the card is bad.
