AMD overclock advice.

This is my first venture into overclocking, take a look at these screen shots and tell me what I should be working on. I know it's pretty mild compared to some of you guys, only about 7-8%. My memory well default to 1866 IF I run two sticks (8mb), but with 16mb it defaults to 1366. 1696 is as fast as I have had all 16mb and be 100% stable. Prime95 torture test has been running a couple of hours now and temps remain as in the screen shot.

Ok if you have ram that runs at 1866 and when you ad the exact same ram to 16 it defaults to 1333 ?

then it has to be one of the memory sticks that are no good should run a mem test
even if they default back to 1333mhz you should have a option to choose it's rated speed im not sure if you mean when you have one set it just goes to 1866 or you have to adjust them to 1866

anyway you have done a very mild oc that probably would not need a voltage change max turbo on FX4170 is 4.3Ghz you are running 4.664Ghz hardly a need for a voltage change the chip is already set pretty high so an increase of 300mhz won't hurt a bit I don't think and if you ran prime with no errors then you should be fine

It's a limitation of the cpu, the 4170 well run 1866 with just two sticks but defaults back to 1366 with all four banks filled. AMD has this info buried pretty deep on thier web site. I may do some bench marks with just two sticks to see if it's worth loosing half my ram. I did have the cpu to 4800 but was seeing random errors. I have not played with cpu voltage...yet.

Been playing with the GPU today, this 7770 does not like a lot of OC. I've read that some are getting 1250 core and 1300 mem. Best I can do so far is 1125/1275 and that's with a +10% voltage. Upping the voltage brought the temps dowm. I would push 80C with FurMark and now it's 72-73C with the same fan profile.

you would probably need a moded bios for that I moded my 2x 7970's to Ghz ed

That is what I was wondering is that what he was trying to do ?

drop it to 1600 or even go from default 1333 MHz and go up it will still be about the same gains

Thanks for that link Britten. Currently I have the 16mg (4X4) OC'd to 848X2, or 1696. This OC has been stable through several torture tests this past week. I'll keep working at this, I want to see the rated 1866 with all 4 sticks installed.

When the memory settings in BIOS are set to default is when I have the expected 1866 with 2 sticks and 1366 with 4 sticks.

Question about the GPU, when I upped the voltage 10% I saw a reduction on full load operating temps, is this normal?

I have something similar with my DDR2 8 GB RAM 800mhz G-SKill but should run at 1066mhz, do to the same limitation of the CPU and MOBO. What I did was to make sure I had a CPU that could handle that and then OC my RAM in the BIOS using CPU-Z for the timings and voltage. I've been running the RAM at that for the past year. What a difference it made doing so.

Because you overclocked the Gpu it might needed that extra voltage to even out

Also if you really want to get that 1866 going to have to sacrifice some more multiplyer and bring it up fsb

That's my next step. As I recall changing the fsb changes several other settings.

ok Key things to take into mind HT keep it at 2600 or under never over you can have it 2660 but don't go over 2700 2600 would be the best to keep stable

now when you use FSB that will change along with the CPU clock so that is why you must down clock the multi up the FSB adjust the HT to keep it with in 2400-2600 range preferably 2600 and you should be alright also might might run less voltage depending on how it reacts to the FSB some limits are like 250 some 270 in case you wondered there are many tuts on FSB overclocking

I use a combination of both multi and fsb but in your case you are going to rely on FSB mostly so it will be a learning experience

I'm happy with the CPU side but I have had to back down on the GPU as I was having random freezes related to the gpu driver. I have gone several days now without a freeze. It would always self recover but I shouldn't have them in the first place.

That has been a issue with the 7870 for some reason they blame 2D for that Crash and recovery

it is said to overclock the 2D portion of your card to 300mhz and it should stable out Adjusting 2D clock speed with ATi cards?
