Solved AMD X4 9850 Temp Issues

You should measure from the plastic side of the socket until about 2cm to the side cover. Once your case is a mid tower, should give something around 13 / 14cm. But please confirm ....

Not sure that I understand. Her is a picture of the MoBo. Do I measure toward the back of the case or toward the front?

I had very similar issues with a slightly different Cpu, and my problem was not the heat sync itself, but the cheap fan that came with it. I think your heat sync is very much the same as the one I'm using, unless yours is special which I doubt.

AMD doesn't use much compound and I saw my temps drop when using the Arctive Silver 5, so I've got to assume your problem is regarding the fan and/or heat sync.

Regardless, since you intend to overclock, you should look into a better heat sync and fan. In the meantime, it won't hurt to remove the HSF, clean off the paste, and do it again, and try your best to make certain you have the heat sync down tight and center on the Cpu.

If you're running a big powerful video card, for now, try leaving the side panel off of your case until you can get a better HSF. If your case temps are within 5*C of your ambient room temps, you're fine, if case temps are much hotter than that you'll need to do more than just a HSF upgrade, such as an auxillery fan if your case has a place for it. Otherwise you can modify the case if there's a grille on the side panel and mount a fan that way.

In short, reapply the thermal paste doing your best to make sure you have good, center, tight contact with the heat sync. Test to see if there's a difference in temps. Then, if you haven't done so, leave the side panel off the case, and note any difference in temps, this can help determine the problem. Post the results, along with temps you get from the previous advice you got here.

Those Phenom's do run kind of hot, but not that hot. I had almost identical tempurate problems no matter what I did, until I installed a better fan. And your fan may be worse than what I got with mine.

I have removed the side panel and the temps didn't change. Actually went up slightly. I will remove the heatsink and reapply paste tonite. The fan runs @ little less than 2400 rpm. It is 80 mm fan.

No more heat problems. Tried to remove heatsink and it would not release from processor. Pulled the processor out of the socket still attached to the heatsink and bent pins. I am done!

That damn Arctic Silver is super glue in disguise.....

If you intend to continue: This can happen from time to time, it's happened to me more often than I'd like to admit. Normally the processor isn't damaged, I've never had pins bend on me when this happens. But more importantly, bent pins aren't the death of the Cpu.

Very, VERY, carefully, and in just ONE motion, gently, slowly, with a firm grip on the Cpu, bend each pin one by one back into place as close as you can get. Don't worry about how straight they are UNTIL they're all back about where they should be.

It's important that you do it in one motion, don't overdo it, and don't move a pin half way in one direction and then the rest of the way in another, the less movement the better. As you can imagine, bending them too much back and forth weakens them, very quickly, and they can break. Athough, I've had to do this several times over the years on other systems and I've never had a pin break.

Once the pins are straight, be sure to get the Cpu and HS clean, papertowel, bathroom tissue, is what I use, something weak so if somehow any of it touches a pin, moving it around won't bend a pin, it will simply tear the paper.

If the fan screws on easily from the top, you could remove the fan before installing the heat sync making it easier to hold down tight and center, but only if the fan screws install easily and from the top, otherwise you may not be able to re-attach the fan after the heat sync is in place.

Post back if you have any trouble, also if you really don't much experience with this, you can watch a few videos on Youtube to get a good idea how it go's. Just search cpu replacement or cpu install and even search your specific cpu and you'll find lots of videos. This will make you more confortable.

I looked at trying to straighten them but I am not sure my eyesight is up to it. I will try to find a magnifying glass.

I just found a magnifying glass but I cannot see the pins to straighten. I can see their shadows from leaning but I cannot see them on close inspection. Damn old age!!! Even if I try to guess I won't really be able to tell if they are any straighter.

If the processor can't be recovered, I was thinking about this package as a replacement. My MoBo is Asus M4a785m and it supports AM3. Also, my memory is Crucial 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory.
This package includes a fan from AMD so I would expect that it would do fine.

That one will work no problem, but depending on which bios version (at least version 0604) you have may take a bios update for it to be detected properly.

The performance would be much better, no doubt, but it would suck to take a loss on the other. If you have a camera, could you maybe take a close up, hires picture of the back of that Cpu so we could see exactly how bad it is?

Also, the Phenom II's are far, far superior overclockers than the original Phenom's. (The 4 digit Phenom's ie 9850, suck, the triple digit Phenom II's, ie 955, are great) Even the original Phenom Black Edition Cpu's (What you have) were barely overclockable, practically useless black edition Cpu's honestly, and I'm an AMD fan.

Well it survived!!! My neighbor and I used magnifying glass and twizzers to straighten 12 pins in 4 different rows. Took a while. We kept testing on the socket until finally it fit. I have now purchased another heatsink and fan that have cooled it down to 30 C at idle.

So now it starts once again!! Thanks to everyone who provided assistance.
