Hello Grimlock,

GIF files will only play in Internet Explorer, but you can set Windows Photo Viewer to only view them as a still image.

I found that you will need to right click on the GIF file and use Open With to select Windows Photo Viewer as the default program instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Try putting out the idea to make a codec for WIC to support animated gifs

I also made this because IE took to long to start up.
gifview.exe (Removed, obsolete: see last edit)
Set This as the default program to view gif images. It is written in GDI+, so you can expect the same level functionality as the onw in win XP. As it was written by me, I can taylor it to suit your needs. Source available on request

EDIT
Someone decided to take the windows XP image viewer, wrap it in an installer, and release it as a patch. Wolfzoon was the one who showed me it, props to him

I've looked over it, it seems clean and runs just like it did on XP. This is a much MUCH better option.

EDIT EDIT
The guy who wrote that was sloppy with his reg work and it did not work on my system where D is the main disk. So what could I do? I went over it and re-wrote it from scratch! Notes in source (as always) and a compiled, easy to use installer here and at the bottom of this post
Code:

Awesome Thanks heaps corgano. I was about to set up a dual boot xp because of this & now i don't have to. I don't know source codes but the only thing missing is zoom. Either way, thanks again.

Zoom is a pain, as you would have to zoom every frame. other than that, it works fine.

No worries. It a great tool nonetheless. The fact i can cycle through what other gifs are in that location just adds another advantage.

I downloaded that, opened it and selected "run," but nothing happens... am I doing something wrong?

Yes. It works the same way as the one on xp, it is imposable to open by itself, but can be opened with an image. right click a .gif image, click open with, and set this program to default. or you can click and drag a gif image to open the image with it, but you cannot run it by itself.

I joined this forum specifically to thank Corgano. I was shocked to find out windows 7 didn't display animations the way XP does. I feel much better now - thanks again.

Anyone have any feature requests? I might do a little bit more work on it in my free time...

Just want to request for zooming feature, although I do understand that you're said before it's a pain. Well, you can try it on your free time anyway, and that feature (as you said before) was available in XP before. :geek:

So good luck! I know you can do it, like how you create this simple, yet important apps. Oh I forgot, thanks corgano for this. :)

i hate to admit it corgano but a zoom type function is the only thing missing really. I wont ask for that though as you already told me its too hard/time consuming which i have no problems at all, im grateful as it is.
Most gif's i look at are under 500px in size so the first thing i can think of would be seeing if the image preview area can stretch as well when enlarging the program window, & the other thing option i can think of, if it is possible is to add a button which can open the built-in magnifier.

Humm. I will post a version with a "shortcut" to the built in magnifier, and should be able to stretch the window to the appropriate size for the opened gif, just have to find where I put the source...

Great!

great work there! yeah, zoom would be fun, but first the only issue i've encountered soo far is when it brings up my .gifs....they seem to be anchored on the bottom right of the pic, and that corner is actually centered, not the center of the pic....not much of an issue with most .gifs, but it ends up cutting off the top of my larger ones....
