Another activation question

I had a similar experience to the nearby thread, "Why is this install valid?".

I have a Gateway NV51B that had a bad HD. I put a replacement in, and then brought over a clone of an Acer 5354. As you know, Gateway has been owned by Acer for some time.

When all was said and done, the clone was activated without any effort by me. Subsequently I validated it online. All well and fine, but the question is whether the validation will prove reliable.

I'm pasting the MGA results here, and would appreciate any insight into the murky world of activation. Thanks.

So that looks sound? My confusion stems from being told - at least I think this is what he said - that this is the way XP activates, but from Vista on each install was specifically tied to the MB's SLIC table.

OEM SLP: This is the key that came in Windows (from the factory). It works by connecting to a BIOS flag (the SLIC table) found only on computers from that Manufacturer. It also checks for the existence of proper matching licenses in the OS itself. Once it sees both, it self-activates every time the machine is rebooted.

COA SLP: This is the key seen on the sticker located on the side, bottom or in the battery compartment of your machine. This key is for use if the OEM SLP self-activation stops working for whatever reason.



You got lucky - Acer own Gateway, and use the same SLIC table for both makes.

Just out of curiosity NoelDP. I had some issue with windows update, so dell sent me a re-installation cd (not a recovery disk) and the driver disk. The Windows 7 sp1 disk is pre-activated. So what method is that?

OEM_SLP activation is the only method for such things - which is NOT pre-activation, but activation on every boot using the licenses and certificates in the OS and BIOS.
