I have what most of you would class as a legacy machine. I self build this pc just before AGP got phased out, then had a kid and now cant afford to continue rig building.

What I have is what I have, upgrading components isn't an option, unfortunately.

So I have had a GeForce 7600gt card running in my rig for some time as that was, as far as I knew, the best AGP card I could get (didn't really want Radeon as nVidia have always been great)

Recently I upgraded my Little Bro's pc for him and stumbled across the ASUS AH4650 AGP, which I gather is just the Radeon re-labeled. With a little bit of frigging about I got it installed and working fine on his machine and thought it would be great in my rig.

Off I went and purchased myself one, deleted all the nVidia drivers and stuff in safe mode using driver sweeper. Ran ccleaner to make sure all residual stuff was gone. Installed the card and rebooted.

This is where the fun started.

I have tried installing the current Catalyst Control centre for AGP, device manager see's AH4650 but I get "no ati drivers installed or installed incorrectly" or something like that

removed everything and installed the AGP 11-1 Hotfix, device manager see's AH4600 series but I get "no ati drivers installed or installed incorrectly" or something like that

removed everything and installed just the drivers manually, device manager see's AH4650 but I get "no ati drivers installed or installed incorrectly" or something like that

I have tried many of the suggestions here but always seem to be coming to a loss and I'm not a noob when it comes to PC's.

It's bound to be something to do with the nforce3 drivers conflicting but obviously that was unsupported pretty much as soon as vista came out.

Please help me, this is driving me mad. I don't really want to have to return the card. I dont play games on my rig it's more for HTPC but the 7600gt is struggling with High Def and Bluray stuff

Thanks

For the same price as the Graphics card I found this:

IF I upgraded would this be any good?

Just means I would have to buy a new Graphics card and PSU. The ram I have already would fit this board.

What your talking about now is practically building a new system less the case and the Ram.
In my opionion if you want to have quality Blu Ray playback your going to need a PCI-e card so it's really up to you on how much you want to spend.

Not to mention a good program to run it on I use Power DVD 10 Mark II 3d got it cheap on ebay $39.99 for a download, with key and registration. Works great.

ATI/AMD cards are vbery reasonable especially the 5XXX dries cards which would work very well just check out this guide for what power supply to purchase.

so if I got a SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5770 PCI-E Graphics Card I would require a 450w PSU for the graphics but would I need to go higher to accommodate all the other components? So for example get a 600w?

So I'm looking at:

ASUS ''/ AMD M2N68 630a ATX Motherboard - with AMD Phenom X3 8550 Processor £89.87 direct swap for 4650
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5770 PCI-E Graphics Card £150
OCZ 600W ModXStream Pro ATX Power Supply Unit £57
Existing 2x 2GB DDR2 Kingston

This board would let me upgrade to AMD Phenom X4 and a fsb up to 2000?

You have three things going against you getting that 4650 to run,

1. The Nvidia NF3 chipset which essentially has zero Windows 7 support due to Nvidia dropping support for it like a hot potato shortly after the NF4 came out, means no working AGP driver short of getting luck and getting the last XP one to install.

2. An AGP ATI card.

3. Dual core AMD CPU.

Add all three up and there have been very few if any that have managed to get that combination to work in Windows 7, to the point that I don't think I have seen anyone with that combination and be successful with it.

As for your CPU/motherboard upgrade question (let me guess, Tiger Direct bundle), the CPU and motherboard will be an upgrade over what you have but are both old and outdated as well. It also has onboard video (Geforce 7025/7050) which is actually weaker than your 7600 GT. The one good thing is that it has a PCI-E slot which would make adding a video card much easier.

If you really want to look at going that way how much can you afford, and we can see what we can find.

I cant really afford what I'm suggesting. Horse string budget. I'm in the UK and those prices are from my local PC World

If you can suggest better for the same amount of money I'm all ears.

EDIT*

In an Ideal world:

I would like to keep my existing CPU as its fine for what I use my rig for "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

so really just a motherboard, pci express (2.0 now is it?) to replace mine that I can shove all my components on and upgrade my graphics

well the psu is where he shouldn't go cheap ,that will make or break a rig you can find a quality psu

A 550 watt 80+ ceertified that would fire it up just as well and give stable voltage through out the rig just my opinion

just for the sake of it all i looked it up and posted the link of what it looks like that bei being the one suggested earlier http://www.dabs.com/products/best-value-750w-black-psu-12cm-dual-12v-ce-pfc-model-750ub-5HMY.html

and this is what i suggest for the sake of having something worth getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016

Same problem here. I'm still forced to use Windows XP because I own the same ASRock motherboard as b0dyrock2006 with an ATI HD4650. Please keep us posted about the specific compatibility issue.
