Another Windows 7 suddenly not genuine issue

Norton carries with it sundry things that bear no relation to its function - while strictly speaking these are not 'bundled' software, they are not in any way or form useful products and are known to cause problems in use.

Never have caused me a problem. What in your learned opinion is "sundry things that bear no relation to its function"? Please post your documentation.

Unfortunately, AVG has now also gone into the registry-destruction business - it's one of the reasons I stopped recommending it (together with the other blotware, and the norton-esque attempts to take control of the system)

Just because you own a jet, doesn't make you a pilot...Layback bear.
One has to know how to use software and if you have no recent experience with one you have no inkling of how it performs yet you still feel the need to knock it. My Norton has no such tools. You should have a look at what NIS really is.

NIS and Norton 360 are different beasts, I admit - and I was referring mostly to N360. From what I can make out, though, NIS is likely to become extinct as a product.
ALL AV's have blind spots - Norton has some doozies!. I've seen apparently up-to-date Norton machines infested with all sorts of dross, that would have been stopped by MSE - or even by older versions of Norton!

okay, sorry for being so long getting back to this.

I uninstalled McAfee, ran the MCR tool, then tried installing Avast, the free version. However, Avast installed, but won't connect to the account I set up. I go to setup, account, and tell it to connect, it asks for my email and password, a window pops up telling me welcome to Avast, but it still won't connect. So that's one problem.

The version of Windows is still not genuine, and when I tell it to register or try to change the product key, it still gives me an error. After installing Avast, I re-ran the MGADiag tool, and below is what I got. Now what?

(and if you could tell me what the problem is with Avast, I'd greatly appreciate it! I want my AV turned on!)

And no, up until now, I had never had another AV installed--just McAfee

Also, as a side note, this computer has Origin installed on it. I asked my roommate about that product, as it pops up every time the computer is turned on, and she said it was from EA Games and was required to be installed for her to be able to play Sims 3.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing the free version of Avast 3 times and couldn't get it to work, so I just uninstalled it and installed the free version of AVG instead. While some might not recommend AVG, at this point, I just wanted something else as a temporary protection instead of McAfee. Once we get this issue fixed (or I finally end up having to completely re-install windows), I'll install something permanent. Until then, I just wanted some protection.

I also downloaded and ran CC Cleaner, though I also know there are conflicts out there whether that's a good thing to use or not, but I figured at this point, I wanted to try something, so I ran it, but when rebooting the machine, I still don't have a genuine copy of windows, and when I tell it to activate or try re-typing the key, Windows still gives me an error.

also, I downloaded Malwarebytes earlier to check for malware on the machine. Can I leave it installed, or do I need to remove it?

I'm still none the wiser about which service may be being referred to in the error message - and having problems working out how to discover it without actually attempting to starrt every possible service and see if one fails to respond - but even that may not discover the culprit as it may be a failing call, rather than the service itself at fault.

The line number referenced is merely the end of a FOR...NEXT loop, which itself calls a number of elements, which (I think) involve a number of services, so it's not much help.

The fact that Avast is also experiencing problems would tend to imply that the problem is itself fairly deeply-seated, and may be the result of malware.

I think you would be best to consider a repair install, and hope that it fixes the problems. Is your install disk an SP1 copy, or is it the original release copy?

*sigh* I was afraid it would take a re-install. Though the free version of AVG installed with no problem and is running fine, and the problem I was having with Avast is apparently common, as I found numerous references to it on their forum--but no good suggestion on what to do about it.

The version of Windows I have is SP1

All I can guess is that perhaps the failed security update messed something up--my roommate tells me tonight that when it tried to install the update last Saturday (and she's just telling me this now), that it failed and she got the blue screen; when she restarted the machine, the version of windows was not genuine, and it tried and failed repeatedly to install 4 updates. I have noticed that its no longer trying to install those updates now; I don't know if it finally worked or if windows stopped trying to download them.

There is a world of difference between a repair install and a re-install!
(although you should back up before doing either)

With a repair install, you keep all data and installed programs - and merely lose the installed update.
With a reinstall, you lose everything.

Well, I ended up having to do a complete re-installation. I called the computer manufacturer, who was very helpful with that, especially as it wasn't as easy as it should have been--which with this computer, doesn't surprise me.

We had a time getting the installation to start from the disc. First, it would tell us it couldn't find the correct disc drivers, no matter what the guy had me do. After we finally got the install to start, he waited until it got to 3%, and then told me how to re-install the drivers once it was done and we got off the phone. 5 minutes later, at about 20%, I get an error message 0x80070570 telling me windows can't install the request files, that something may be corrrupt. I tried calling the guy back, but their office had closed (they apparently don't have 24 support), so I told it okay, which took me back to the main install screen, and tried again.

This time, it worked, and I was able to install all the drivers--so we now have sound again! And my roommate will quit whining about not being able to watch her political news clips!

I'm still wondering about why with this computer, whenever I try to install something, sometimes it fails the first time before installing it on the second. Truly, I won't be surprised if in a few months, something fails like my hard drive....

So, anyway, thanks for all the help, I'm just sorry we had to end up doing the drastic solution--but hey, at least it worked and I have my computer back! And thank goodness this isn't the computer that I keep everything on--that would be a bear to re-install! (of course, re-installing lotro and all its expansions and sims 3 and all its expansions is going to take my roommate a few days )

A recovery like that shouldn't have problems unless there's hardware issues (either the disk, the reader, or - usually - RAM).

You may want to test the RAM out with a decent memory tester - memtest86+ from www.memtest.org - you'll need to download it and create teh boot media and then boot from that.
