Hi Matt,

I would be very suprised if MSE caused BSOD's, and Avast is used here extensively without reported problems.

I recommend following this tutorial to post your BSOD results:

There are many experienced people here that can analyse that and help you sort it out. It would also help if you filled out your system specs fully to make it easier to help you.
