Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials still works, and uses the same definitions as Windows 10-11. There are threads here about how to get it working correctly, so that it self-updates.

There are also many good free third-party apps. You have to put up with constant messages about the urgent need to use their premium version. Heck, I have a paid one and I still get constant messages to upgrade. That's the catch. Well, they are in business to make money.

Basically, what you need depends largely on what you do. For casual surfing, with basic cautions like not clicking on everything you see, downloading stuff you really aren't sure about, etc; MSE is fine. If you think you need more, as I said, plenty of options.
