I have both an old XP and a Dell Win7 and am considering updating the Dell Win7 and eventually buy a new laptop to replace XP.

I've read some pieces about Win10 and am not quite sure as to some of the areas. Basically is there a change in Windows now in terms of having to pay for it monthly or something like that? Is it difficult to do the changeover.

In other words how different is Win10 as compared to Win7, don't need to know the basics just what is completely different in terms of having to deal with updates and costs.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Windows updates well that depends on versions 10 Home is pretty restrictive not many options available to beside on what to download and install Home version does it automatically.

Pro has a little more options but it's only when not if they install.
But Pro does have group policy so it's easier to block Bing web search/ Cortana/ lock screen/ hibernation...

Still way to early imho opinion to do a upgrade barely a month into it now and it's good for another 11 months.

Well if you have a cell phone you pretty much can see the new start menu along with many other settings pages it is a mobile platform for the most part.

You can visit Windows 10 Forums
And get info from people using it.

I'm personally not going to upgrade any 7 Home premium version.

No, there is no monthly subscription now or in the future. Cost is equivalent to 7 and 8 when they were released, once the Windows 10 free upgrade offer expires July 29 2016.

Windows 10 is a cross between Windows 7 and Windows 8. Add Classic Shell or Start10 and it looks and feels a lot like Windows 7 or a tamed Windows 8.
