Any FREE Lightsaber movie effects programs?

Hi all,
I'm from the world of mac users and will soon be using Windows7 on my Macbook Pro for some study stuff I'm doing.

I was amazed that Mac didn't have the lightsaber effect in their otherwise quite fantastic iMovie software.

Does Windows7 have anything?

Eons ago I heard there was this thing called LS_Maker but I'm wondering if the video codecs have changed since then.

Anyway, what do you wall recommend? I've heard all about FXHome, Adobe products etc but I'm asking about any new FREE stuff promoting Windows7 or their latest incarnation of movie-making software.

I tried LS_Maker and it imports the .avi files and turns them into pixilated mush. Oh well. Looks like I'll have to buy FX Home.
