Machete Lite is a good lossless editor that can join AVI to AVI and WMV to WMV, provided the 2 segments have the same frame rates.
Other formats will requires something else.
Sometimes you can rename divx files to avi and then handle them with Machete Lite.

I have Machete Pro since years - I think I was one of the first paying users. It was only $19.95 at the time,
It is an excellent tool for pasting clips together - the only editor I know that is super fast and does it in a completely lossless fashion. But the pieces have to be identical in their specs - framerates, sound, frame size, etc, etc. Since Machete does not reformat the video, they cannot handle any deviations in any parameter.

I highly recommend format factory, its a free and very powerful tool. it converts almost every type of file including video, audio, and picture files. it also has a video joiner feature which i have used and works perfectly. heres a link
