Apple Is Now Bigger Than Microsoft: The Most Valuable Tech Company

I sort of agree with Colonel Travis. I dont want to, but it is looking that way.

Example: I am sure a long time ago when cell phones first came out people were like, why would I need that. I have a house phone. and then they realized the use of it because of the mobility. The first cell phones were monstrous bricks and had limited functionality. Over the years, developments have been made and you will no longer see anyone with a huge cell phone.

Ok now apply this to mobile computers. laptops and even netbooks will be monstrous devices compared with the iPads and Slates of tommorow. Although right now the iPad doesn't do everything that a PC can, the basic needs of mobile use can be met. and through Apps and flash programs, you can do most of the things you would need a PC for. PC's instead would then only be usefull to business professionals that require excel, or Word or sharepoint etc. Most anything else would be covered by the tablet PC's.... and getting slimmer and more compact.

The problem right now with small portable devices is the screensize and component limitions for fitting in the space. These are not fit for some programs or functions. Tablets fill that gap between Handheld devices and net/notebooks.

I disagree, i would say most of what a desktop can do can not be done on a ipad and never will or at least not soon. Cad programs on a tablet? Online gaming on a tablet? HD video on a tablet? just to scratch the surface.

This isn't a fair comparison at all. Windows doesn't sell computers, think pads or phones. The only fair comparison would be if you compared the actual sale of one Op system to the other. In this case apple isn't even in the same class. Now if you want another unfair comparison try comparing the sale of all machines equipped with Windows 7 to how many macs are sold.

would tip the scales for ya if i could. pry the most accurate post on this thread in my opinion

thats why I said

I wouldn't expect Cad on a tablet, this (to me) falls under business professional use.

But! that doesn't mean it can't be done. For Example, If the only thing you needed to run on the tablet is a CAD program, you could have it running as a portable display (its main function). Imagine walking around a 10 acre building site with a tablet that has the full layout of the building your are about to construct. And an app overlay of your position through GPS. This I think would be doable. It would be a tablet for that business application and nothing more. This is already being done in certain fields and the companies that implement them see huge improvements for specific roles over laptops.

I have seen another area of use that implemented and used tablets specifically to perform in the field. Public Health Workers use then to grade restaurants. They went from clipboards with paper forms to Tablets with handwritting recognition to load all the info directly into thier system instead of filling out forms and then having to do data entry. this is not everywhere. Most still use paper. but the county that implemented this saw a 100% return on the investement. Less man hours, less error. More accountability of when forms were filled out. GPS to show the Worker where the restaurant was. Direct uploading to the database. No more logging original hardcopies of forms. everything benefitted.

I never said tablets would take over, only that their uses will be seen more and more. I myself would get a tablet quicker than carrying around a laptop and having to unfold it everytime i used it if all I am using it for is email and surfing the web.

Saying PCs are not the future does not mean PCs are dead or will ever become extinct, or that tablets or phones or whatnot can replace them immediately, or in two years, five years, 10 years, etc. They will be around for a long time, but they are not the main focus any more, they will be integrated with smaller devices, and it is those smaller devices that are growing like crazy at the moment.

Research & Markets March 2010
There were an estimated 1.2bn computers in use worldwide at the end of 2008 with mobile PCs driving the current and future computer expansion although general PC growth is slowing.
