I should say that not all update problems affect every system. So I wouldn't just dismiss the likes of KB3121461 for your particular setup.
It may depend on what recommended/optionals have been accepted in the past. It has only been in ~ the last 6 months or so that I have decided to only install "Important" updates.
As I have said before I now routinely make a system image immediately before installing updates just in case. I think this Jan update was the last problem for me so maybe things have settled down.
