Are you going to upgrade to Windows 8?

No, a thousand times NO!

I have worked with Windows 8 long enough so that I can compile my 40 project Visual Studio 2005 solution using Visual Studio Express 2010 and run it. The experience was rather like doing heart surgery through a three millimeter incision in the patient's belly button. Calling Windows 8 unproductive and hostile to content developers is praising it to highly.

I despise the Apple UI but it is VASTLY superior to Windows 8 and its sub-Fisher Price Metro and featureless, flat, white only desktop. My plan is to support my current software on Windows 7. I will soon start transporting major portions of that software to the Apple Mac, iPhone and iPad in an attempt to avoid getting trapped by Microsoft stupidity.

Microsoft is on a rapid downhill run heading for the edge of a cliff. It had a nice run but it is now a company without a brain run by MBA's who have never designed or built anything other than fantasies and spreadsheets.

Been running it on a test machine for a while, got RTM on it now. But based on current performance, issues and personal feelings towards it, no, none of my important machines (home server, HTPC, Main photoshop and music production machine, or laptop) will have it on them. And like mike1977 said, this will be the very first time for me ever since DOS 2.0 that I did not upgrade my system to the latest version the day it came out (or frequently before due to MSDN accounts).

That says a lot :(

I may upgrade my notebook, but probably not my desktop. I do somewhat like some of the multitasking, yet I feel like I would eventually grow to detest some aspects of it. While it might be good for tablets or for browsing the web, I feel like it wouldn't be quite right for full-time use. Additionally, if I cannot dual-boot with Linux, I would also have to say no to windows 8. It is only 40$ for a upgrade from 7, which is much better than windows has been in the past.

depends on how it works in multiscreen environments, the few times i stuck it on my desktop it didn't do what i wanted it to do which was very annoying.

however i've been using it on my netbook since it was first available and it's been flawless on that, even the metro has it's uses there despite the fact i can't use any of the metro apps due to resolution restrictions.

performance, second to none, it would wipe the floor with windows 7 in raw performance the base coding is much smoother.

reliability, i know some have had issues as there should be with a beta, windows 7 wasn't without it's own issues at launch either, yet despite beta issues it's got incredible potential amazing reliablity.

ui, well hmm i won't follow others in their hatred for metro, tbh on smaller screens it's rather usefull and i can imagine on tablets and smaller laptops it will be quite popular despite some peoples hatred of it, on a desktop.....just to clunky isn't refined enough to see high use in a working environment.

apps, i gotta be honest i've never really liked the tiny crappy app philosophy, sure it's nice on tablets and phones, but i'm running a sodden i7 and 12gb of ram i don't need some shoddy half assed app thats not able to fully utilise my hardware and have some important functions and features missing that you would expect from a proper full software environment. so apps on my desktop gets a big thumbs down.

summary, a decent os at the core, fluffed up by some really bad choices that are too forced with lack of alternative options.

this is windows here not mac os where one shoe fits all or not at all, there is a reason windows has 95% of the pc market and thats not through forcing our hand with a ui we can't change or modify to suit our needs.

Ho Hum

No upgrade here. I am running it in a VM so I can examine it. So far I don't see any thing I am missing with Win 7.

In fact it appears to me to be written for a touch screen and a user that wants to use the cloud. I may not be correct in this next statement but it looks to be an interface to buying their apps and services. I use a lot of MS apps but I am not into MS have a lock on me.

It is not a bad piece of software it just doesn't appeal to me. If MS was to pull some stunt like forcing me into it (Win 8). I would seriously consider another operating system.

After navigating through Win 8 for awhile I am getting more adept at it but it still doesn't appeal to me. I installed an app to get the start button and menu back and it works fine. Still not thrilled. In the past when MS issued a new system, I either really liked it or really disliked it (Vista). This one I look at it and almost drift off in to a sleep. I'm happy for those of you who are enthused and maybe over time I will come to like it. Meanwhile, It looks like it's me and Win 7.

Windows 8 is going to make Vista RTM look terrific! I detest the Metro (or whatever they are going to call it now) interface and think MS is doing the - Buy the gun, buy the ammo, shoot self in foot - trick on this one.

The Start Menu isn't gone. That big blocky thing with the large squares IS the start menu. It serves the same purpose, but the look is different, and the objects on it are large so a user can push them on a touch screen. All one needs is to learn three or four new keyboard commands and the new Start Menu will become 2nd nature.

Faster? A little. Perhaps 5% to 30% faster compared to Windows 7. It depends on what program a user is running and the computer's hardware, etc.

I will pass on Windows 8 because it will not allow me to set up the machine in the "Classic" mode; that is without the stupid and vague pastel transparent colors that make it difficult to see what objects are really in focus in the menus.

Also, the blue window on bootup with the black background is visually jarring, and annoys me to see it.

Besides, why should I have to hit three or four keys to do something when only one key function is required in Windows 7?

The new Reset and Refresh features (used to be called Backup and Restore) are overly complicated and much to slow.

Sound nit picky? Probably, but that's my reaction to the interface.

I won't be upgrading to w8 for the reason of. I have it dual booted on my system and I find it runs slow and I really dislike the ui. I will be for sure skipping w8 and keeping seven as well. Id still have xp but I built a new system and the only way to take full advantage of my hardware was to use 7. But I love 7 Niice easy to use ui.

No way!!! It's simply horrible and difficult to use. It's solely designed for tablets which make impossible to use on a real computer under a real production environment. And since compared to Win7, it has lost many important features without having anything new, it should be called a downgrade instead, it's a plain worse option.

I may install it again on a virtual machine, just to test it a run some software of mine for testing, but possibly never on a real one. This one is going to be a big failure, like Vista and Millennium.

I upgraded from windows 7 to Linux Mint. I got so tired of ''xxxxx is not responding" or "Updates are being installed" ...a 5 year old HP laser Printer never worked with Win 7 but with Mint it installed first time and works perfectly. Mint is a beautiful system , light , stable and easy to use. Oh and free. It boots up in a third of the time that Win7 does. Windows 8 .. no thanks I will not pay for a system which looks like its made for a teenagers mobile phone

That metromess? Not a chance.
I wouldn't even consider downgrading to W8! That's why I just bought a brand new W7. I intend to run W7 until Microsoft comes to their senses, and that might be quite a while.
I'm not a Microsoft hater, I've bought XP, Vista, and W7, and W7 was the best of them all! So what does Microsoft want to do with their best OS ever?
They wanna kill it and replace it with Metromess 8.
Well, thanks but no thanks.
