I'm having a bad night.
Recently I put a new HDD in my rig and started using it as my c:/ drive.
So I've been transferring my games and installing them from the original DVDs onto the new drive.
Tonight I decided to have a fresh start with Batman as I hadn't got very far with it anyway.
I'd already installed it so I just put the disk in and went for play in the games menu.
I then got the splash and a drop down saying I need to log on with Windows Live.
I do that and another drop down tells me I need this update to Live.
That takes half an hour and then BSODs before completing.
This has now happened twice:mad:

Determined to play something I opened Steam where I had also installed some games I bought.
Steam keeps crashing.
I then went for Dead Space in my Games panel and got a message saying I had installed it too many times and would have to buy a new activation code.
I believe I've installed it three times.
Needless to say I'm despondent. I paid £40 each for these games and right now I cant play any of them.
What's going on:(

Make sure you install all the original drivers for your computer from the manufacturers website as Microsoft's drivers don't always work brilliantly.

Thank's for the reply. Yes I have installed all the latest drivers.
But things just got worse. I had Mass Effect installed (also EA) and that started ok.
I was just going through the character profile and settings procedure and I got a blue screen.
I booted up normally and was just going for the start menu when I blue screened again.
This is rather worrying. I installed the new Nvidia drivers earlier so it could be them.
However this is the first time I've tried to game since putting in this new hard drive and doing a clean install of Windfows 7 x64 plus every other thing I use.
It's going to be very hard to tell what's wrong.
Any suggestions welcome:confused:

PS I'm in Vista x64 now which is on another drive and seems fine:)

Download diagnostic tools for your hard drive from the manufacturer. You should be able to check for any errors on the hard disk which might attribute to blue screen's. What is the blue screen message you are getting?

Disable Automatic System Restart and you should be provided with an error code when the system crashes.

  1. Right click Computer, click Properties.
  2. Click Advanced system settings on left hand pane,
  3. Click Advanced tab and select Settings under Start-up and Recovery.
  4. Untick Automatically restart under System failure settings.
  5. Apply Settings. Done!

Hi. I'll try that.
In the meantime I get a "I_R_Q_L Not Less but equal" error stop.
I've had a look but can't find many mentions of this code.
Just to be sure I rolled back my GPU drivers from 195.82 (beta) to 195.62 (WHQL)
I then managed to get about ten minutes into Mass Effect when I BSODd again. Same error.
I'm going to bed now but any input on this would be great, :)

Hi Undercover. I've done as you suggested and disabled auto restart.
I have to go to work now but I will try some gaming again this evening and post more detailed info on my bsod.

Thanks for your input, John:)

Hi. Just had another bluescreen. I was just getting to the end of the prologue in Arkham Asylum, the game hadn't even started.

The message said; DRIVER_IRQL_NOT LESS_OR_EQUAL.

It then goes on to advise to check if any new hardware or software was installed correctly and to disable it if problems persist. It also mentions disabling a couple of options in the bios.

Problem is the whole rig is a new build about 6 weeks ago and I put the new drive in and made that into my c:/ drive last weekend so did a clean install and then added software etc. This makes it hard to isolate what's causing the issue.

I thought it might be a RAM problem so I've run the W7 memory dignostic and Memtest86 v.4 and they show no errors.

anyone got any ideas on this?

My problems are getting worse.

I did a system restore to see if that would help and then tried Batman again.
This time I got a way along on the prologue, joker in the lift. Not as far as last time.
All the while I got a form of artifacting where there are momentary rushes of diagonals. This is so fast it's like a flash. After a few of those the whole screen broke down into squares and then froze on a disintegrating blocky image.
I exited by stopping the process in Task Manager and everything is fine now but I am no closer to curing this or even finding out what it is:(
