Aspects of ads that irk you

Same. If I were to buy a product that was coincidently part of a 'decent ad' - it would only be because I was going to purchase that product anyway. Certainly not because of the ad itself.

Ahh, the virus ads. One bad ad for a bad product opens the door for a whole new breed of bad ads. They spread like a nasty infection and always get worse before they get better.

- I notice they only ever portray winners..
- never a mention of the countless thousands of losers..

No, I'm afraid it doesn't. This merely confirms your preconceived and generalised assumptions based on an extremely small cross section. At best it may "infer" that several people in this thread are too attached, yet that particular inference is still only based on assumption since nobody here has mentioned what they watch, how long they watch; or have been watching for.

People have time to watch some pos phony reality - game show they have time to use for something more important in their lives. Get something done that doesn't expose you to these ads for gods sakes.

This is just a personal bias with erroneous inferences. I'm extremely confident in stating that ads also exist outside of "reality TV" and game show genres. Ads can and will be found across every genre. I personally don't watch any "reality TV" or game shows, yet I still encounter a plethora of ads in other varied genres.

Implying they are not doing something important whilst being exposed to ads is also an erroneous assumption. Just because a TV is on does not automatically confirm that they are "glued to it" to the detriment of any other life enriching activities. It is quite possible to be doing something else; important or otherwise; whilst a TV is on. A multitude of reasons. Furthermore, what constitutes as a "more important thing" is very much open to interpretation.

Seems some people would rather willingly be brainwashed by the media telling them what they should pay attention to. Oh but they don't want to hear that. And the 'powers that be' certainly want your attention for advertising space.

This would be a tangent. Once again an assumed and generalised inference.

However I partially agree. I offer no proof apart from also falling back on to generalisation and learned bias, but there are indeed many who "appear" to "go along" very easily with having their choices made for them. However the majority are simply ignorant and completely conditioned. The companies that hire professional manipulators, or "marketing/advertisers" do indeed want attention. That's why they exist.

And the result is? Annoying bloody ads.

Actually, some of the Farmer's ads are pretty good, despite their goofy stupid jingle. I like it when the guy pulls out the car keys and throws them as far as he can. If only more 'rents would do that...

Got netflix, youtube- no tv for me.

I'll be dead before I see everything in my instant Que. I love it!

But I understand everyone has different content/wants compared to my own.

And I'll be dead before I ever use*&^%$#@! Netflix! Too many years of intrusive pop-ups and pop-unders, often with self-starting audio, have completely soured me on the bloody b*****ds. I finally had to buy an ad blocker to get rid of their blasted ads because the donkey excavations kept finding ways to bypass the free ones! I won't even buy a TV that has a Netflix button on the remote! There is no way those weasels are getting a penny of my money! In fact, I feel they owe me money for my wasted time and for using my computer without my permission!

I don't mind ads and commercials since they do serve a useful purpose. In the case of internet ads, they pay for the websites we get for free. And occasionally they inform me of new products and services I may be interested in. However, I draw the line at having them rammed down my throat, such as with pop-ups, pop-unders, self-starting audio, and annoying, distracting animation.

I have similar feelings about TV commercials. I learn about a lot of new products and services from them. Since all my TV is from OTA broadcasts, they also pay for my free TV. They also provide a convenient break for quick pit stops, snagging snacks, etc. I don't know how many times I finished watching a two hour show on PBS with my legs crossed because there were no commercial breaks. However, there are a handful of advertisers that have ads that are flat annoying and obnoxious. It seems the lower budget retro stations have the largest concentration of those ads.

Yes....Never saw a "blasted ad" from netflix. Not even on friends computers or on tv....not saying they don't exist. Its your experience and opinion. But I love there service.

Any ad that has very low quality and unprofessional recording. Especially those ads about websites that are willing to "fix" your computer. Well actually, i hate all ads except for SOME Super Bowl ads and promotinal ads about new shows/episodes for the channel i am watching.

And those ads that come up every commercial breaks. Why can't there be a change of ads more often so it interests me at least a little.

I'd be happier with that myself. But unfortunately due the way the sell advertising space, prime slots vs non-prime, demographic based, show popularity all with different costs etc; I don't see that ever changing.

Tbh, for shows and movies I really want to watch ad free - I Do. I've never had pay TV simply because there are just as many ads, if not more than free to air TV. And there was a period of around 6 mths a few years ago when I actually removed the antenna and enjoyed a true ad free period - yet the TV always come back and so too do ads.
